It is with great excitement that I have found an ancestor from my mother’s side in Plymouth Colony. Most of her forefathers sailed to Virginia or below, but this particular Taylor branch had some distinctions. Margaret Diguina Weeks is said to be the Wampanoag daughter of Quadequina. There is dispute about this, but I do hope I can confirm these facts. My 11th great-grandfather, Quadequina, introduced popcorn to the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving.
It becomes complicated because there were two Richard Taylors, both married to women named Ruth. I have not traced them back in England to know if they match up in the old country with the other Taylors. Ruth Wheldon’s father officially objected to her marriage to my Mr. Taylor, helping us narrow down some of the facts. If Ruth Wheldon had a full-blooded Wampanoag mother, Ruth was a kind of Pocahontas of the north. I need to do some research on this to see what I can learn. The story is amazing.

Here is one account of the story of Margaret Diguina and her tribe:
“Gordon B. Hinckley, Shoulder for the Lord” by George M. McCune page 35- ” Two of the early immigrants to Plymouth colony were Gabriel Wheldon, of Arnold, Nottingham, England, and his brother (name unknown). Gabriel had been married in England before sailing to America but his first wife named Margaret evidently was deceased at the time of his migration.
Both brothers had a free spirit much like Stephen Hopkins and found their way to the camps of the Wampanoags. There they both fell in love with two of the daughters of Chief Quadequina, younger brother of the Great Chief. They each married and Gabriel gave his second wife the English name ‘Margaret’ after his first spouse. The two counseled with their father-in-law and his older brother Massasoit regarding what to do. The Plymouth Colony would probably punish them for their intermarriage. Massasoit advised them to return to the colony and all would be well.
The Plymouth Colony tribunals saved face by banishing the couples from Plymouth for life but did not send them back to England. Gabriel and Margaret established their home in Barnstable where the Hinckleys came in late 1630’s and here Gabriel and Margaret raised a large family of girls.
One of those girls was Ruth Wheldon. This is a score!!

Hello I am a direct descendant of Catherine Wheldon b. 1618 who married Giles Hopkins. I would imagine Ruth must have been her sister. We strongly believe that yes indeed Margaret was the daughter of Quadequina. We have her listed as being born in 1604 though and we don’t have a reference for the Weeks name. We have her listed as: Margaret Diguina (Oguina). I would be interested in the Weeks aspect of the name and we’re still trying to sort out the question of Diguina/Oguina as there are references to both names in our research. It was by sheer coincidence that I ended up descended from both Stephen Hopkins and Edward Doty. The only connection for our family is me, the lines never joined for us until my parents met and married in the 1960’s.. All these generations later I have to wonder what they (Stephen & Edward) would have thought about that. 🙂 It can be very difficult to sort things out and then as you have already run into there are many people who shared the same name during the same time. It’s a pity better records weren’t kept or saved from those early days in the New World. One might think that someone might have recognised the historical importance of that time though I imagine they just had their hands full trying to survive.

It is more sad than we could imagine. 200 years of history were wiped out. They count their ancestry from the 1800’s from English names….200 years lost!!! I am dealing with it as our tribal members do in Cape Cod. They need help!!

It is very cool. What is not cool is that nobody knows where Quadaquina was buried. It is an honor, but when you follow what the Pilgrims did to the tribe….I think you will freak right out. You are not related to King Philip,( Metacom) are you? That would be huge.

Thanks, Susan. I am also heavily related to those Mayflower peeps and more interested in the Wampanoag tribe. It would be super easy to be mistaken here because there are no records. I went to Mashpee and Plimouth Colony in May and learned a lot, but not what I expected. There are no graves or records for the tribe until the 1800’s and then they trace ancestry with English names…..

I know that it is Wheldon, but for some reason her maiden name is commonly given as Weeks..no idea where it came from..nor do the people at the Mashpee Wampanoag museum…Their first records are from the 1800s

I’m curious as to where the Diguina and Weeks names came from as neither one are in any of the documents from that time period I’ve actually seen. I know there is a Diguina family line over-seas and could see that mistake happening, with her original native name being ‘Oguina’.
But the ‘Weeks’ is confusing. The only thing stating that she may have remarried at some point is a group of difficult to read documents, and that sounds like she may have remarried the other brother wheldon, not anyone by the name of Weeks. strange.

My Grandpa was a direct descendant of Catherine Weldon; all daughters down to his mother; I am trying to work on finding other female descendants from his mother’s family and Grandmother’s family in case one of them can do an mtDNA test my Grandpa was an only son and his two sisters died young.

I hope you find the right person to test. Alas, I am not the person. I have discovered an error back in the 1700’s in South Carolina that put this entire branch of my tree into question. I had a DNA test in Ancestry.com’s system and show no Native American heritage. I was very sad to find this error in my tree,since I had become very attached to these people.

Ok …..these is just getting worse….I’ve been reading your comments…….I’m trying to find info on King Philip……his line married a Woodbury…..and starkweather……father side of family…….I’m related that way……I’m supposed to be related down my mothers side to an peter Alexander ….goes to a weetamoo or someone called Quinapin? Now I’m reading that Catherine Weldon …..I’m a descendent of Stephen Hopkins and his son Giles …..may be related to this Massasoit to?……..is there a list of people descendent from the two sons Alexander and King Philip I can read. I’m confused as my cousins have had there DNA tested but no Indian blood? How is this possible….if Philip only had 3 daughters that weren’t put on the slave ship……two went to Canada …..that left one starkweather one….where is DNA trail…..can anyone help clear this mess up .

Marty—I am not related to Quadequina…I made a mistake in the 1700’s in South Carolina and had to cut this entire branch from my tree. I leave this biography because many people are searching for the same info. I have no idea if anyone can clear this mess up for you and Giles Hopkins…I hope so, but I went in person to the Plymouth and the Wamp Museum, and got no better info…best of luck.

Maybe …..i’ll take a leaf from your book and do the same thing . Just stop short of putting them on my tree.in all three lines…….as there is no records I can find with clear cut answers…….and everyone has differing opinions . So…..I think I’ll leave it for future generations to discover the truth about this mistery .

Thanks for the indian info. We’re finding our foremother was Chief Massasoit’s youngest daughter. It has been a needle in a haystack, because of what you said on Plymouth Colony displeased with intermarriage. My family and I are conservative Christians of the Anabaptist faith (Brethren) but don’t feel the Puritans always dealt with situations according to Scripture. Having both native American and Pilgrim blood in my family line, I feel both sides!

how exciting for you. I am 85 and ever since I was small we were told we had Indian ancestry. I also thought it was in my Jones/Wright line but could never find it. I have a friend who basically has the same story and his Indian ancestry was also connected to his Jones line, but I can’t get our 2 Jones line to connect NOR do I know what our tribes are. Guess you can’t keep up with the JONSES.
