I am writing this time about our ancestor Sarah Allen (b. 30 March 1639) in Braintree, Massachusetts. Sarah was the 2nd wife of Josiah Standish (1633-1690), the son of Myles Standish of whom I have previously written.

While looking at our Mayflower line, I began to wonder about the genealogy of Sarah Allen. So I looked and the genealogy I found for Sarah Allen and the Allen family really surprised me. It is too vast to cover here completely, so I am just going to cover the surname of “Allen” going back from Sarah.

So, going back from Sarah Allen up the Allen line into England, the name Allen morphs first into “Alleyne” and then into “FitzAlan” or sometimes “Arundel”.

The FitzAlan family is ultimately of Norman-Breton origin. They are hard to portray in just a few words. Nevertheless, in brief the family originated in Brittany, France, and shares common ancestry with the Scottish Stewarts as descendants of the eponymous (named for) Alan fitz Flaad grandson of the Seneschal of the Bishop of Dol. The FitzAlans held the Earldom of “Arundel” during the period 1267 – 1580. Variants of the name include Fitz-Alan, Fitzalan, Fitzallen, Fitz Alan, FitzAllen, as well as the locational variants of Arundel and Arundell because of the Earldom.

I think it is fair to say that they are among the leading families in the history of England.

ONE LINE OF SARAH ALLEN (B. 1639) GOES BACK THROUGH JOHN ALLEYNE (B. 1410). THAT LINE IS OF ROYAL DESCENT, INCLUDING SUCH NOTABLES AS EDMUND CROUCHBACK PLANTAGENET, KING OF SICILY (B. 16 JAN 1244), HENRY III, KING OF ENGLAND (B. 1 OCT 1207), JOHN “LACKLAND”, KING OF ENGLAND (B. 24 DEC 1167) AND LOUIS VIII, KING OF FRANCE (B. 3 SEPT 1187).
ONE INTERESTING THING IN THIS LINE IS THE LINK BETWEEN JOHN D’ ARUNDEL (B. CIRCA 1347) AND HIS SON, JOHN ALLEYNE (B. 1410). OBVIOUSLY, THE DATES SEEM IMPOSSIBLE. YET, THE GENEALOGICAL COMMUNITY SEEMS TO ACCEPT THIS LINK AS FACT. I AM UNSURE OF WHAT IS GOING ON HERE BUT I THINK IT EXTREMELY UNLIKELY THAT PEOPLE OF SUCH HIGH STANDING ARE NOT THOROUGHLY AND ACCURATELY RECORDED. THE ANSWER IS PROBABLY JUST IN THE WAY VARIOUS PEOPLE HAVE RECORDED THE VARIOUS DATES. THERE IS AT LEAST ONE OTHER POSSIBILITY. MORE ABOUT THIS LATER.

THE OTHER LINE OF SARAH ALLEN (B. 1639) GOES BACK THROUGH THE WIFE OF JOHN ALLEYNE, NAMELY, AGNES FITZALAN (B. 1411). HER FATHER WAS THOMAS FITZALAN, 12TH EARL OF ARUNDEL (B. 13 OCT 1381) AND HER MOTHER WAS BEATRICE OF PORTUGAL (B. CIRCA 1386). THUS, AGNES FITZALAN’S PATERNAL LINE GOES BACK THROUGH THE SAME ROYAL COMMUNITY AS HER HUSBAND, JOHN ALLEYNE (B. 1410). HER MATERNAL LINE GOES BACK TO ALFONSO IV, KING OF PORTUGAL (B. 8 FEB 1291) AND THE HOHENSTAUFFEN ROYAL LINE TO NAME JUST A FEW.

So, could the link between John d’ Arundel (b. circa 1347) and his son, John Alleyne (b. 1410) be explained by concerns over consanguinity? Could concerns over consanguinity have driven the choice of a Portuguese bride? Something else? Who knows? Just a few random thoughts.
