Elizabeth Cocke, 6th Great-grandmother

Malvern Hill

Malvern Hill

My 6th great-grandmother was born in Virginia in 1720 in the home where her father had been born.  The Cocke family came to Virginia in the 1600’s and played a significant part in the colony’s affairs.  She married into the Holt family, another prominent family in Williamsburg.  When I was a child my parents took me several times to vacation in Williamsburg.  I always looked forward to being there to be immersed in the history of the place.  We stayed at the Inn and walked around town to see the blacksmith, the candlestick maker, and many historical reenactments.  I have vivid memories of buying sealing wax, which I used on all my correspondence until I was about 18. I had a real thing for fancy stationery and sealing wax that began when I saw it in use at Williamsburg. Now that I know my ancestors lived there I am even more thrilled that my parents (who had no idea about the ancestry connection) gave me the gift of an early interest in history.

Elizabeth Cocke, probably b. 1720’s; m. Dibdale or Dibdall HOLT, son of David HOLT & Margaret DIBDALL of New Kent, Hanover, and Williamsburg, VA (b. 1720’s; d. aft. 1792). Dibdall probably met Brazure COCKE’s family in Williamsburg where the HOLTS were a prominent family. Dibdall’s brother John HOLT served as mayor of Williamsburg and later published newspapers in New York City and Norfolk VA. Dibdall is named in John HOLT’s will, dated Oct. 1, 1749, proved Oct. 30, 1784, in New York. Dibdall’s sister Jane HOLT was married to a famous Presbyterian minister, Rev. Samuel DAVIES (1724-1761), of Hanover Co., VA. Dibdall probably married Elizabeth COCKE roughly 1745 and moved to Amelia Co., VA, soon thereafter. He can be found in Amelia Co. as early as 1748 when he witnessed the will of William STONE (Amelia WB 1, p.55) and was still there in 1762 when he appeared on a tax list. He lived in Nottoway Parish, which later become Nottoway County. A deed dated Dec. 14, 1751, from Phillip STONE of Johnston Co., VA, to Charles CONNALLY & Robert TAYLOR of Nottoway Parish, describes 100 acres in Nottoway Parish adj. where Dibdall HOLT now lives, Charles CONNALLY, Joseph HARPER, Robert TAYLOR’s line by the county line, and William STONE’s line now Dibdall HOLT’s. (Amelia Co., VA, DB 4, p.338.) Robert CHEEK worked as Dibdall Holt’s overseer and lived with him in 1754 and 1755, according to the Amelia Co. tax lists & court records. Dibdall’s daughter may be the Elizabeth HOLT who m. Samuel BIRCH (or BURCH) on May 1, 1764, in Granville Co., NC, with Robert CHEEK as bondsman. Dibdall moved to the Natchez District of the Louisiana territory sometime in the 1770’s & settled in an area that later became Jefferson Co., MS. Dibdall’s name appears on a petition dated Oct. 4, 1779, “from the citizens of Natchez to Lieut. Col. Dickson, 16th Reg. commanding his Britannick Majesty’s Forces in the River Mississippi. . . .” He is also mentioned in his sister Sarah TRULY’s will dated Mar. 15, 1792 (Natchez Dist.) and in other Natchez records. Children may have included David HOLT (m. Rebecca BELK), John HOLT, and William HOLT (d. 1836 in Hinds Co., MS).

I think that Elizabeth Jane Cocke was married 3 times. First to Dibdall Holt. He died. Then she married Samuel Burch, he died. Her third husband was James Truly. My Great Great Grandmother was Lucy Ann Burch Lewis. Her line is a succession of male Burches that lead back to Elizabeth Jane Cocke Holt Burch Truly. I believe she went to Mississippi with my Grandfather, he died there, and that is where she married James Truly.

Dear Pamela,

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=149890741

This is the Samuel Burch that was my Grandfather. The marriage date of Elizabeth Holt and he are listed here. I am just getting back to genealogy, having taken a year off.
I am always thrilled to find new information.

Dear Pamela.

http://www.moonzstuff.com/cocke/brazure.html

Here is where I got the rest of the information on my Grandmother. Notice it is by the Cheek Family. I correspond with Jessie Cheek in Texas. This is my family Cockes, back to Brazure Cocke, and husband’s family back to Brazure Cocke through Mike Cheek. It gets interesting here. Mike Cheek and I are related in Virginia, and he is also a Cousin of my husband’s through the Peyton Family in Texas! Also, Mike Cheek through my Grandfather’s family the Eaves in Texas. We are a spiderweb! My husband’s Great Grandfaher x10 was Thomas George Lassiter ( Leister) one of the Mighty Men of 10 to protect Dr. Pott, Jamestown physician. He is also listed with our Grandmother, Joan Pierce, and step grandfather, Captain William Pierce, John and Elizabeth Pott, as an armed guard during the Powhattan Indian Attack 1622. All five survived. Thomas George Lassiter’s brother Edward Lassiter ( Leister) died with our great Uncle Samuel Maycocke and is buried at the Macycocke Plantation. He was one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact. Now what are the chances that the GG of Joan Pierce, and the GG of Thomas George Lassiter would meet almost 400 years in Southern California and get married not knowing any of this until 2014!

I have a few people in my tree that marry after a few hundred years into the same families…I think it is eerie, but somehow destined. Thanks so much for all the detail, my dear cousin.

I finally got to visit Malvern Hills Plantation two weeks ago. I was graciously escorted around, by Meade Ferguson Welch.

I also finally realized that Dibdall Holt had two brothers that were Mayors of Williamsburg. That would be John and William, so they would be my great grand uncles. Also, Dibdall’s sister Jane, was married to Reverend Samuel Davies, so by marriage, he would be a great grand uncle, as well.

After my grandparents Samuel Burch, and Elizabeth Cocke, and her father Dibdall Holt went to Mississippi, my descending generations continued to explore and move. They went to Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas, and California.

Pamela Morse—I finally made it to the Malvern Hills Plantation on August 9th of this year. Jeanne Parke, now deceased since that time is Cousin of a Cousin in Texas. She was good friends with Meade Ferguson Welch, whose father owned the property. He also now deceased. She graciously showed me around. I would have loved to have had a brick or pieces of one, but the Virginia Historical Society has purchased the ruins. She said if it were up to her, I could have one, but she owns the property, they own the ruins. I would love to hold that brick fragment as a reminder of my ancestors and as an inspiration. No need to ever feel sorry for myself. I did kneel and run my hands back and forth over the front step. So many historical icons crossed the threshold, also related to us. It was exhilarating.

I just realized today, we have three Williamsburg mayors in our ancestral relations. Dr. James Cocke, son of
Thomas Cocke of Malvern Hill, Thomas was a Grandfather, and John Holt, and William Holt, who would be my Great Uncles as Dibdall Holt, was their Brother, and one of my ancestral maternal Grandfathers, in the ascendency line.

Wow, Kandice, I envy your experience. That sounds amazing. I went to Williamsburg as a child a few times with my parents and was in LOVE with the place. I still have clear fond memories of it. This information makes me want to go back more than ever. Thanks for sharing it with me, cousin.

You can go there, yourself. Meade Ferguson Welch, wants as many to come as can. It is not where I expected it to be. It is right above the Malvern Hill Battlefield. Let me know if you would like her email. Okay, now I have been unraveling something interesting. William SF Burch, did not go to Jefferson Mississippi with his mother Elizabeth Cocke Holt Burch. Now some family records say that Samuel Burch was killed in a bitter duel, some say a duel with a slave. So, this was definitely a departure to a new place. She took her other children, and married James Truly, and Mr. Truly was a Cousin. Dibdall Holt, her father goes with them, not an easy trek for an old man. But William SF Burch, born about 1770 went to North Carolina, where he married Elizabeth Sherman. They had the following child, Richard Burch born 1795, in Person County, North Carolina. He married Mary Ann Smith, b.1794 on August 18, 1818. She died in Claiborne Tennessee, in 1850, where they were living.
In 1820, they are still living in Caswell, North Carolina, according to census records. In 1830, they are living in Claiborne, Tennesee. In 1850, they are living in Bradley, Tennessee. This is when Mary Ann Smith dies. The following children in census records living there are: 1. Mary Burch born 1830. 2. Marlin Burch b. 1832. 3. Houston Burch b. 1834 4. Callaway Burch b. 1836 5. Malvina Burch b. 1838. 6. Lucy A. Burch b. 1845 ( my maternal great great great grandmother) 7. James Burch. Lucy A. Burch marries David Krockett Lewis from Tennesee. They have a daughter, Mary Melvina Lewis, my great grandmother, who marries Thomas Moses Terry. They have a daughter, Ethel Mae Terry, she marries Ruel H. Eaves, and they have my mother, Anita J. Eaves.

All of this verified through the Mormon Church Library.

Pamela. I am related to the Cockes through my maternal Grandfather’s side, as well as my Grandmother. My Grandfather’s mother was Lula Emma Richardson Eaves. Her father was Joshua Richardson. He has a great great grandfather x6 I believe, I would have to count them, also named Joshua Richardson. Joshua Richardson married an Ann Cocke, daughter of John Cocke of Virginia. Now I have to unravel which Cocke, John came from. Col Richard for sure, in the background, but which son and wife!

Pamela. A correction. I did find Elizabeth Cocke in the Chamberlain Cemetery, wife of Dibdall. So, the whole family leaves Virginia. But of Course no Samuel Burch, husband of their daughter. Pauline Burch Chamberlain would be a fascinating woman running that inn on the Natchez Trail where the Steamboats unloaded. Reverend John “Jacky Burch,” and the other son was Washington Burch. I think her plantation is stil standing. But again, no grave there for Samuel Burch, who died in Virginia.
