Jung's Kundalini

Jung’s Kundalini

One of Carl Jung’s most controversial theories was his view of the God within. He was drastically disappointed in his first communion at the Swiss Reform Church. His father was the pastor and Carl was a faithful member of his church. He expected something more, or different, when he attended that communion. He basically never stopped pursuing that ecstasy he had wanted through religion for the rest of his life.

His later years were consumed with individuation, which he considered to be the meaning of existence. He used artistic expression, dream journaling, and isolation in a primitive tower built by his own hand to achieve his own individuation. He studied ancient alchemy and philosophy. His belief that symbols contain the most direct and deep meaning lead him to study ancient texts and charts. To Jung individuation was not a substitute for God, but a deep search for the divine nature of self.

His investigations were deep and lengthy.  He stated that he only studied of God as a psychological  archetype and not as religious doctrine.  His idea of the collective unconscious is that images and symbols are primordial.  We absorb symbolic messages but do not analyze their meaning.  That is why Jungian therapy can include sand box drawing, word association, and art  to discover archetypes.  Dream work is a pivotal part of Jungian analysis. In his tower, reading about ancient alchemists, living without modern conveniences, Jung came close to living in a dream.  Most cannot afford such an extravagant personal quest for the divine, but we can all do a little dream investigation.  Does God enter your dreams?

Red Book

February 19, 2013 — 2 Comments

“My friends, it is wise to nourish the soul, otherwise you will breed dragons and devils in your heart.” ~Carl Jung, Red Book, Page-232.

Carl Jung changed the history and the practice of psychiatry. His work is used today by some who are not even aware of his influence or the story of his life. The Red Book was published posthumously after being locked in a bank vault in Switzerland for many years.  Finally out of the shadows itself, the book serves as a deep reference as well as an artistic guide to the underworld.  How would the Red Book of your soul look?  When do you plan to create it?

The Gossip Archetype

February 15, 2013 — 2 Comments

If you have attended an elementary school you have been involved in gossip. Private information spreading is power for the gossip. It can have two distinct patterns running at the same time. Damaging or false information may be spread as well as flattering or promotional stories.  This is a member of the creative family and can be considered to be artful and expressive.  Dr. Phil and his ilk fit into this category. Networking can be a positive form of gossip designed to help others.  To make the best of your own gossip within notice the news you spread and why you do it.  To a certain extent we all make our own PR as well as our own self image.  We spotlight or eliminate part of the story for effect, even if we are unconscious of it, and even in our memories.

How can the gossip teach us to respect the feelings of others? If you observe your own communication carefully you can spot trends.  The shadow gossip my bring you news of all kinds, but it is not your job to share it.  I know plenty of people who do not watch cable TV but are still influenced to believe what they are told, read, or hear.  Due diligence is your friend when it comes to discernment and discretion.  Know what you mean to say and why.

Do Not Mess with Cupid

Apollo and Daphne

Apollo and Daphne

The myth of Daphne is an illustration of fate and revenge of the gods. She was part of cruel power play between two archers, Apollo and Eros. The proud Apollo bullied Eros who shot two arrows, one tipped in gold and the other in lead to find revenge. Eros, the son of Aphrodite enchanted his arrows to cause total lust and desire in the golden arrow victim, and total hatred in the recipient of the lead tipped arrow. Apollo was hit with the golden arrow, and the object of his desire, Daphne, was struck by the lead one.  The struggle between lust and chastity is ended when Daphne turns into a laurel tree. She begged her father to transform her body forever in order to escape Apollo’s desire for her.

Eros is the god of sexual desire. He marries Psyche, a goddess/human representing the human soul.  They have one daughter Hedone. Hedone is the quest for pleasure with only good consequences.  The English word hedonism is derived from this word, but has a meaning far from the original.  Eros is also known in Rome as Cupid.  We know this god as a logo for Valentine’s Day, a time when we honor a Christian martyr by consuming mass quantities of cheap chocolate.  Neither Valentine nor Cupid will be impressed nor honored with a mindless mandatory purchase of tacky gifts. That is neither pleasurable nor sexy.  Eros, Apollo, Daphne, and Aphrodite are archetypes that exist in the human pantheon of possibility. Which one will you play on Valentine’s Day?

@Pontifex Punts

February 12, 2013 — 1 Comment

To tweet as the holy father of the Catholics was a much dirtier job than Benedict could ever have imagined.  His twitter stream is full of everything that life contains, much of it funny and irreverent. Since he longhand wrote his tweets (in Latin?) and was assisted in the typing of 140 characters, we can only assume he did not read all his tweeps remarks to him. He kept a certain distance from his own stream, since this was the first papal twitter stream and had to be approached with caution. Ironically he is the oldest pontiff elected in 300 years, so his decision to enter social media was a little off beat.  The Vatican social media experts will now need to make some decisions.

Does the handle stay with the office or will Benedict be tweeting as @Pontifex in his retirement?  Will he start to type his own and read those of his tweeps? Is he finished with twitter?  Will the tweeps be more kind to him now that he has end of life issues in public?  Will the new Pope have a fan page and G+ account for hanging out?  Will the Vatican social media presence develop customer service that wows Catholics back to church?  Will prayers be launched to protect the church and the Pope from trolls?  These and many other questions will face the new Pope. #Paxvobiscum.

Aphrodite, Cupid’s Mother

Aphrodite

Aphrodite

The Greek goddess Aphrodite was born from the sea near Cyprus.  Some claim she had parents (Zeus and Dione), others say she sprouted up in the vicinity of  the severed genitals of the Titan sky god Uranus. She walked ashore where she encountered the seasons who were beautiful, but had nothing to compare with the loveliness of Aphrodite. She was taken to meet Zeus at Mt Olympus who recognized her striking beauty and the power she wielded with it.  He insisted that she marry immediately, and arranged a marriage to his son Hephaestus, blacksmith of the gods. He made her jewelry and even a fabulous girdle that made her even more desirable.  She was pure attraction and her husband was busy making all the weapons for the gods, so she had several affairs with gods and mortals.

The Olympian gods took power from the Titan gods. Kronos, the son of Gaia and Uranus (Titans) removed his father’s genitals at his mother’s request and threw them into the sea. The ambiguity about the birth circumstances ( Did she spring up on the scallop shell as an (un?)intended consequence of the disposal of Uranus’ genitals ?) cloud her relationship to the gods of Mt. Olympus. Her full-time job is love, desire, and the attraction that draws people together.  This naturally lead her to attract Ares, the god of war, to her bed.  She had many children, but none with Hephaestus.  Her most well-known child is Eros, also known as Cupid. He too has parentage issues, but some say he is the son of Ares. It reminds me of all those WWII movies in which they are at war, so they fall in love.

Get your red dress out for Valentine’s Day , but give a nod to the mother of all desire.  Consider wearing  some very sexy sea foam green panties as your foundation.

Lunar New Year in China

February 9, 2013 — 2 Comments

The official political message this year of the Communist leaders of China is curb waste and conserve air quality this lunar new year. Banquets and fireworks are under fire for waste and pollution.  The ancestors are featured heavily in celebrations of this holiday in China.  The festival begins on the new moon, this year 10 Feb, 2013, and lasts for 15 days. Many Chinese people travel great distances to be at home for this time of year. Fireworks are central to the family party.  I am a huge fan of pyrotechnics.  I am not attracted to witness displays in China because frequent fires and accidents are the result of unregulated manufacture and distribution.

The practice of making noise to scare away evil spirits is ancient.  China produces 90% of the fireworks in the world after inventing them.  The original firecrackers were chunks of wet bamboo thrown into a fire.  The invention of gunpowder in China around 600-900 AD changed everything. The public and private parties to welcome the Year of the Snake will last for a month.  If you want to party with the Snake, clean your house, wrap even numbered  dollar amounts in red paper and give them to your family, and do not wash your hair or sweep your house on the first day.  You may be able  follow up with Lion dancers in your community, and if you are lucky, some fireworks to scare away the evil forces in your life.  Good to go.

Valentine for Kali Maa

February 7, 2013 — 3 Comments

The Hindu goddess Kali has protection on her mind at all times. She is one heavily armed vigilant  benevolent mother. She has a red tongue to represent our carnal desires, and she prefers red flowers as an offering. Remember Kali at Valentine’s Day because she is the ultimate power ranger of tough love.  She can and will make or break you. Understanding the Hindu pantheon will not conflict with your religion, and may bring to light your own relationship with the wrathful mother.  You do not have to call her Kali to know who she is.

Kali is the destroyer.  Her name is based on the word time.  Nothing escapes time.  Her job is to shatter illusion. She shows up all blue and naked with weapons and multiple severed heads and arms. She herself has four arms to administer justice.  She is intent on the destruction of evil, and like all mothers, teaches her children about evil in doses they can handle. Her protection is essential for the continuation of the universe, but she gets a bad rap.  Destruction is only the other side of creation.  The birth and death cycle is inevitable.  To grasp the power and the glory of Kali you need to see that time is at least as powerful as space.  Mother Earth is the ultimate judge.  This too shall pass. This year dedicate some red flowers to the eternal protective mother.

Dream Travel

February 6, 2013 — 3 Comments

Remembering and studying dreams can bring insight directly, and later through contemplation. Flying dreams are interpreted as liberation, although Sigmund Freud considered the flying to be representative of sexual release. Floating dreams are indicative of a total acceptance. Floating is representative of great success through calm and unresisting nature. Struggling to stay afloat either in dreams or in waking life has the effect of disturbing the surface of the water, indicating problems.

I have seen confidence grow significantly when fear of water is conquered and the skill of floating is mastered.  Knowing how to stay afloat in water essentially improves our chances of survival.  Appearing in dreams floating serenely is a powerful vision of stress free living. We only dream about people we have seen in our lives, although the circumstances may not be similar in our dreams. The content is very ephemeral and quickly evaporates as soon as we wake and begin to move or interact. To capture and study dreams it is necessary to record the memory immediately upon waking. The notes taken upon waking can be used as the subject of meditation or simply reviewed to find trends. With regular practice and the book right next to your bed it is possible to make significant progress into remembering more details as you keep the journal.

Artemisia Vulgaris is an herb used to improve the quality of lucid dreaming. I have used the essential oil for the purpose with good results. A combination of tea and smoking dried mugwort (one of the common names of this herb) before retiring is a traditional blend for inducing lucid dreaming. This herb has been used for centuries to enhance the dream state. The video above mentions a vinegar tonic easily created by soaking the plant in apple cider vinegar.  Anyone can make use of these techniques to learn more about unconscious and archetypal players in our personalities.
