Being Blonde

Being Blonde

Our bodies serve us as the vehicle with which and for which we live our lives.  If we are strong, flexible, ambidextrous, and well coordinated we are likely to feel good and be healthy.  Improving diet and exercise habits can bring about changes in attitude and vice versa.  The key to being the best body you can be for your whole life is unconditional gratitude for the body you have now.  You may train to become more graceful, more balanced, or more relaxed, but you must work with what you have.  Start by loving your skin and everything inside of it.  An understanding of basic anatomy is helpful in cultivating well-being.  Learning about customs of folk medicine, healing techniques, or diets of foreign cultures can expand the options for self care.  Knowledge and understanding are not the key ingredients in radiant health.  Acceptance and love for all the ways your body serves you are the foundation on which strong healthy lives are created.  What are the different aspects of our physical realm?

  • Thinking me and all the thoughts that I think
  • Feeling me and all the emotions I feel
  • Remembering me and all the memories I recall
  • Sensory me and all the sensations I experience

The body contains all these different ways of sensing life.  Poise, grace, and fitness result from practice.  Practice requires focus of  mind and body to achieve results.  To refine our movements as well as our thoughts we need training.  Staying fit and flexible may be the best way to avoid injury.  Feeling healthy does uplift the emotions and add to self confidence.  Self image is a strong determining factor in the way health is pursued.  To clean up and clear up some possible issues from the past answer for yourself these questions:

  • What message did my mother give me about my body?
  • What message did my father give me abut my body?
  • How did my friends and schoolmates form my body image?
  • What does my lover tell or show me about my body?
  • How do publications and popular culture influence my feelings about my body?
  • Do I compare myself to others in terms of physical beauty?
  • What physical ideal do I wish to have without making any effort ?
  • How delusional are my thoughts and feelings about my body?

If you reflect well on these questions and your honest answers to them you may reach some enlightenment.  Your thinking, feeling, remembering, and sensing selves can invest in better habits when they are grounded in a healthy self image.  First do no harm to your own idea of your body.  From there it is possible to heal misguided thoughts about wellness and self care.  We deserve the best we can give our bodies for as long as we are in them.  Clearing away false judgements from the past makes way for positive changes.

Flaunta, Goddess of Confidence

December 12, 2013 2 Comments

Flaunta was the second cousin of the goddess Aphrodite.  She became the goddess of confidence.  Her journey to her vocation to inspire and represent confidence was a story of self discovery. Aphrodite needed no outside assurance to know she was a great beauty.  She exuded it.  The young Flaunta was not convinced of her own powers, but passed through a jealousy of earth women who enjoyed and were confident in their own good looks.  She studied the powerful and confident women, learning their secrets. Eventually her cousin would bestow the title and the powers of confidence goddess on Flaunta.  She is active today in the complicated self image issues women face about appearance and competence.  Being authentic and unique leads to the highest kind of confidence, as Tank Girl can attest. Confident women know:

  • Personal power and charisma are unlocked with confidence
  • Spending lots of time and money on appearance defeats confidence
  • Standing out from the crowd is a fabulous way to be
  • Following fashion can make a monkey out of you
  • Your instincts are worth following
  • Your artistic style has yet to be fully nurtured and developed

Get to know Flaunta, and take her with you next time you need to look something or somebody right in the eye.  Nothing says “I got this” like control of your gaze.  Bluffing or not, the first impression you give will remain strong when you show self assurance.

Confidence and floatation are close relatives. To swim is to move across the water, and it requires coordination and skill. To make learning both fun and effective for young swimmers they need to feel very good most of the time, and challenged to practice some of the time. I have learned from teaching hundreds of kids (and adults) to swim that the confidence it takes to control the breath is the heart of the swimming game. You honestly can’t teach breath control to tiny kids, and you would be foolish to use words like breath control or face in the water to older kids. You need to first recognize that you have completely different agendas.

Kids want to go off the diving board, do underwater flips and go touch the bottom. Very few kids care if they swim properly or master stroke technique. The ones who are fine technical swimmers usually don’t care about that at all. They just like to have fun at the pool. If a swim teacher wants to have fun at the pool that natural desire must be harnessed, never rushed. Making a drill too harsh or demands too tough can be a turn off for a shy student. It is important to alternate between what is already easy and what is yet to be learned.  My new students are ideal because they already know each other.  This saves much wear and tear since the girls are friends and know what to expect from each other.  The older, taller ,more confident one is ready and able to inspire the younger more timid one without any showing off or ill temper.  Lucky me.  I am also fortunate that our young new swimmer is always in the pool with a parent, so she will not feel stranded in a new situation.

We  also have the major stylin’ gear.  The mermaid kick board, the floating raft, the matching pink goggles and the flippers are all worth trying. Some work better than others, and some are just there to make them feel they are real swimmers with real swimmer items.  I believe in using all the tools and gear that might be helpful, but not allow the stuff to become the major focus, as it can easily with kids. It is natural and easy to switch from  kick board exercises to floating to practicing bubbles while walking across the pool.  One activity or tool does not become stale when you move through the lesson offering enough  variety.  Know that they only want to learn enough to swim away, so provide a safe setting in which they can do that.  Keep it light because, after all, floating is all about trust and ease.

Bubbling Spring of Health and Confidence

January 12, 2013 2 Comments

I was reminded of a meditation technique I used to practice, but have almost forgotten. The bubbling spring meditation is an active way to make contact with the earth element and move stagnant energy in the body.  It is powerful and easy to learn.  I need to brush up and use it, since it is vital to remember how energy flows (and becomes stagnant) in the body.  Kidneys, as well as kidney chi, are the source of confidence and mental clarity.  I think this is the big mental illness plague confusing and freaking out the United States.  The kidney chi of the nation has been trashed with coffee and alcohol, drugs and junk food.  The adrenal gland of the nation is shot from constant flight or flight paranoid delusional thinking.  This is a people in need of contact with the earth, our supporting element. The water element of your body meets the earth at a specific point on the bottom of your foot known as the kidney one point. You can learn about this in more detail from a teacher of qigong, Tai Chi, or any Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, such as an acupuncturist.  I encourage you to do so.

Kidney one, a point to be found on the sole of your foot,  is the important gateway to health available with each step you take.  All you need to do is to find kidney one and start to know how it makes your life either lovely or hellish.  Once you know, you will respect the kidney meridian.  I spent a lot of time in dementia wards for a few years when my mom needed care.  We rescued her from that care because the standard of care  was to  dehydrate the helpless seniors to death. A few years later all the citizens of my country, including the congress, resemble the folks we met in the locked dementia wards.  They are angry, and irrational like crazy fire.  Kidney chi, gentle reader, kidney chi.

The water element is as unhealthy in our emotional society as the bodies of polluted water are around the globe.  We polluted the water on earth the same way we emotionally pollute our society.  We dis the flow.  We fight the river.  We ignore the Tao.  Simple steps can be taken to restore balance and order. Awareness is the key.
