Oil Field Orphans

April 27, 2015 5 Comments

Ruby and Her Sisters Ruby and Her Sisters

The Taylor sisters of Humble, Texas met tragedy early in life

Their mother died in childbirth leaving ten children in grief and strife

Their father rode a black horse around the oil field reading gauges

Recording the data from each well in production for very low wages

When their father killed himself at home he was discovered by his son

Who was only 5 years old. The deed could never be undone.

They had no preparation or reserves for this sudden change

Suicide had swept away home and security, memories forever stained

Electing Apathy

Thorny issues

Thorny issues

The candidates align on left and right with eager well lit faces

Chirping sound bites with sincere well tested spinning phrases

They will sprawl all over the airwaves, call your home and send mail

Proclaiming vague tattered arguments that strike everyone as stale

We will resume campaigns for presidential power through bribery

Lavish spending on election shenanigans supports the corrupt dynasty

To protect yourself from Republicans and Democrats you must be firm

Political parties spend like sailors spreading untruths to make you squirm

As they trot out their make up and their speeches, reject the fallacious

Look at the images they are projecting and recognize the mendacious

After the spending and insincere rhetoric we elect  the same jerks

As if nobody has been paying attention to the way this all works

Thistles for Dinner

globe artichoke

globe artichoke

I ate my first artichoke in New Orleans in the French Quarter

I was a teenager on the town at Antoine’s, an establishment so fine

It arrived looking  exotic, next to a giant bowl of melted butter

I was instructed in the art of thistle consumption, then treated to a sip of wine

I don’t remember the rest of the menu or what else we ate for supper

I decided to adopt flower tasting as a permanent feature of my lifestyle design

My parents didn’t bother with the labor intensive green gourmet delight

I liked the way it revealed itself, required each leaf to be a separate bite

I have a vivid memory of the atmosphere and the formal setting we had

It was fun to discover a dish I loved to eat, with the bonus that it irritated my dad

skeleton

skeleton

Windows of stained glass, gothic arches reaching down from heaven

Contain secret hiding places from which to see the world in procession

Between clouds and stars light years have passed uncounted, forgotten

Pathways of comets, trails of meteors falling to earth, and fools misbegotten

Bright  illumination shines through the veils, the curtain, and the hidden door

While multitudes enrolled in rival schools of thought collapse into war

Youth, athletic performance, strength have become the peak obsession,

Playing games is a metaphor when competition is the prize possession

Keep the Beat

On stage alone declaring how holy is everything

Drama and grit in bohemian glory, unafraid, uncensored

Blazing through the living backwoods of words, bongos,

Coffeehouse in some village overflowing with reform

Of letters, of institutions, of all the powers who regulate

On fat asses that be in charge of declinations that articulate

Judgements for society not listening, nor daring to perform

Shocking truthful rage behind the masks worn as uniforms

Marching single file, lost in the mass shuffle of minds in thought

Keep the beat, a tribute to those poets who knew not what they taught

Currencies and agricultural pursuits have exchanges

Changing times, political events, require sensitive gauges

To measure then analyze the progress we have to report

Comparisons to perfection are built on data that we all support

The withdrawal from nature has no column in this audit of value

The inexhaustible generosity of earth has unlimited virtue

Flowing steadily down from high places feeding the demands

Of a hunger impossible to satiate that nobody alive understands

Pioneers of wilderness and giants of industrial conquest

Bequeath to the future a desolate landscape, fully processed

Isolated Incidents

April 21, 2015 1 Comment

Arcs of time and industry ebb and flow with innovating thrills

Cabinets filled with medicine bottles offering colored pills

Return the reflection with irony and mysterious vague glance

Rusting in the basement of chance, iron predators sing and dance

Post industrial

After thought of swimming in polluted water to the ship of rules

Most of the company parted in haste to avoid the jeering ghouls

Manufactured waste, canyons created by exhausted greedy souls

Sharply cut into the landscape, drill deeper holes, impossible goals

light in that dark

light in that dark

Authority can be dangerous when it is placed in the hands of bullies and punks
Thugs enjoy the feeling they have when they frighten and terrify the public
It is time to call out dishonesty and extortion by law enforcement officials
Who break the law and take the law as an excuse to rob society of basic dignity
Hiding behind their badges they misrepresent reality to emphasize their abilities
They have no relationship with the truth, but are overcome with corrupt power

Dream Dance

Dreaming images float or chase us in spaces we imagine
The faces are all from waking life, although they may not
Play the parts they occupy in regular time, but rather become
Part of an intricate message system designed to save us
From our delusional thought that we are alone, yet stable
Without any assistance from the rest of the universe our
Opinions stagger on in stubborn resistance to the music
Being played in harmony and ecstasy by angelic choirs

When slipping into sleep remind yourself to dance to the tune
Look deeply into the light of the moon, and seek guidance
From stars, from darkness, from your own inner lantern
That preserves the flame, the pilot light, inside your being
Throw silken scarf of brightly colored symbols toward the sky
Encircling the changing constellations of the heavens

Ode to Corn Tortillas

April 18, 2015 1 Comment

I began eating large quantities of corn tortillas about 40 years ago and will never stop
My parents drove all over Mexico with the family when I was a teenager
They were great lovers of restaurants, especially in Mazatlán, where we spent summers
We preferred corn to flour tortillas, although we knew nothing about gluten
Chips, enchiladas, tamales, tostadas and endless tacos have made me extremely happy
It is important to pace yourself with corn because the masa expands after it is eaten

tacos de papa

If you have the chance to eat fresh hand made corn tortillas, jump at it
Salsa, the right mix of chiles for the moment, completes the fun flavor fiesta

Buen provecho!
