Godfrey Ragsdale Jr. And The Jamestown Massacre

My 8th great-grandfather was born in Virginia Colony in 1643.  His parents were both killed in the Jamestown Massacre when he was an infant.

Godfrey Ragsdale I was the first generation emigrant to America. He came sometime before 1641. He and his wife were killed in an Indian massacre on April 18, 1644. Their baby, Godfrey II, was spared. He evidently came at his own expense with intent to inhabit the land, for no grant has been found to him, but there is a record of a purchase of 300 acres of land by deed from John Butler, 25 Feb 1642. This land lay on the north side of the Appomatox River in Henrico Co. Virginia. Source: “Godfrey Ragsdale From England to Henrico Co. Virginia” by Caroline Nabors Skelton; 1969; and Henrico Co. Records; Bk. 6; p. 21.

The Ragsdale family name is said to come from Ragdale, England, meaning either “valley at the pass” or “dweller in the valley where the lichen grows.” Henry Ragsdale was born in Leicestershire, England about 1450, his son Robert was born about 1485 in Ragsdale, Leicestershire, England. He died about 1559 and some of his children were Henry, Thomas R. and John R. Henry was born about 1510; he married Elizabeth Oglethorpe about 1532 , and their children were William, Dorothy, Elizabeth, Margaret, Owen and Catherine. Henry died in 1559. William was born in 1575; he married a woman named Heathcote, about 1615; they had a son, Godfrey I, who married Lady Mary Cookney and they both came to America.

Godfrey Ragsdale I and his wife, Lady Mary Cookney arrived in Virginia some time late in the summer of 1638. They were some of the first Ragsdales to come to America. Godfrey Ragsdale I ands his wife, Lady Mary Cookney lived in Henrico County Virginia on a 300 acre plantation on February 25, 1642, upon the north side of the Appomattox River.

On April 18, 1644 afterwards known as “Opechancanough Day” the Pamunkee Indians and several tribes in the Indian Federation went on a rampage. There was a carnage that was greater than the one in the Norfolk area in 1622. The Indians slaughtered no less than 500 Englishman. This massacre fell almost entirely upon the frontier Counties at the head of the great rivers, and upon the plantations on the south side of the James River. Both Godfrey I and his wife Lady Mary were killed and scalped.

From documents we know that Godfrey and Lady Mary had a son named Godfrey Ragsdale II, who was born in 1644. Because his mother and father had been killed in the “Jamestown Massacre”, Godfrey II’s next door neighbors raised him and later became his in-laws. Historians say that most Ragsdales in America came from Godfrey II.

My grandmother on my Mother’s side was a Ragsdale and I’ve traced her ancestry to this Godfrey Ragsdale through research on Ancestry.com. This was all very fascinating. That side of the family all from Virginia. I’m very proud to have ancestors from the very early history of America!

I am a descendant of Godfrey Ragsdale. If not for his infant son, Godfrey Ragsdale, II none of us would be here today.

I am Rosemary Jackson, great-granddaughter of Sarah Druscilla Ragsdale of Missouri who married James Walker Gallion.

My grandmother, Mattie Inis Ragsdale was their daughter. She married James Walker Gallion.

Mattie gave birth to Rose LaVonne Snodgrass-O’Dell-Willingham, my mother.

I have always heard my Godfrey Ragsdale ancestor was sent, with a sister, to live with relatives in GA after their parents were scalped in VA. I’d like to know if this is my Godfrey Ragsdale family or not. I know that information can be misconstrued over many generations, spanning several hundred years. It seems to be quite a coincidence that two Godfrey Ragsdales would have been scalped in VA. The singer Ray Stevens (aka Ray Stevens Ragsdale) from GA, is definitely a cousin of mine, if that helps.

Hello
My mother claimed to be from the Ragsdales of Jamestown. She had the family bible given to her by her grandmother It had been passed down through the generations. She kept insisting they were on the Mayflower, but I think she did not realize there was a different ship who brought the Jamestown settlers as Ragsdales are not on the Mayflower passenger list.. Sometime in the 1970’s a cousin who was contesting a will demanded the bible if she surrendered the family bible, which she finally did. She said this cousin lived in Texas. My mother is now dead but would like to connect with anyone here that may know of
this bible and our family’s connections.

I’m sure it’s the same family. My ancestor from VA was definitely Godfrey. My mother had proof of that.

I have a small Godfrey Ragsdale book that was written by a distant cousin. I’ve been doing occasional research on many of my family trees. I’m from the Georgia Ragsdale clan, as is singer Ray Stevens. My ancestor moved to GA from Va and I know that his parents or grandparents were scalped by the Indians. With the little research I’ve done, I’ve discovered that a Ragsdale ancestor in England was an Oglethorpe. I’ve found a link to the Dutch Van Rensselaers, the original founders of NY, but don’t know if it’s via marriage or lineage.

you were right about everything except Godfrey ragsdale the 3rd is who came to America, and was killed in the jamestown Indian massacre around 1622. His son Godfrey IV survived, and was raised as an orphan and married his non biological, adopted sister. I’m a 7th generation ragsdale, my mom is Shannon ragsdale, grandpa (rip) was Sammy ragsdale, his dad LD ragsdale, his father ransom ragsdale, his father John ragsdale, and John’s father was Godfrey IV, whose father was Godfrey III

I discussed this part of my ancestry a couple years ago through Ancestry and researching my family tree. My grandmother on my mother’s side was a Ragsdale so this is my history too. Love that my family traces to the early settlers in Jamestown.

Hi Pamela,

My computer apparently won’t allow me to directly reply to you so I’m responding to the email.

I believe there is a small book by Lane Ragsdale, who was from Easley SC and died in Spartanburg SC. I’m going through my late mother’s house and I haven’t found that book, but I have found a manuscript which is probably 100+ typed pages. It’s been years since I read it and I also have a copy packed away in a box somewhere. It gives the family history in England, as far as I can recall, but it’s been many years since I glanced through it, I believe it’s about my mother”s clan, which migrated from VA to GA. Singer Ray Stevens is part of our clan, though he’s a distant cousin (his real name is Ragsdale). My gg or ggg uncle migrated to Texas in the 1800s (or early 1900s) and began a clan there.

I’m so busy closing up my parents house and estate, on top of moving myself to a different city, I probably can’t put my hands on it for awhile. BTW, my email is James.Sitton@gmail.com. My mother was a Ragsdale. I live in both Greenville SC and Atlanta. What branch is your family? I used to be on facebook with Lane’s daughter, Susan Ragsdale King, but she moved to Lyman SC and I lost touch. I just searched for her on FB and don’t see her. I know she has copies of her father’s book.

I had mentioned that Susan’s father, Lane Ragsdale, had written a book on the Ragsdales. I’m saddened to say that I just saw her obituary online from two years ago. Her surviving daughter is Kelly King Gainey, Greenville SC. I see that she’s on Facebook. I’m sure she can tell us how to get copies of the book and give more details on it.
