The All Souls Procession each year in Tucson is a community event that takes mass coordination and will now cost more. Our new trolley system will complicate the planning and add to the expense. The volunteer organizers work all year to make it better all the time. In November another new and amazing, creative expression of this tradition will take place downtown.
I met Gloria on the flight from Chicago to Tucson recently. I enjoyed her company and invited her to call me. She is visiting her son who works at the U of A during the week. She told me she was Catholic and that as a child she walked to mass by herself. She is now fed up with Vatican politics, and wants the Latin liturgy to return. I took her yesterday to see Ted DeGrazia’s chapel to the Virgin of Guadalupe. She had never seen milagros on altars before. Since I would not be caught dead or alive without some milagros on me, I gave her a tiny jet key from Venezuela to unlock her future. I have more at home, and she had no offering with her. I explained that our Virgin is pre Christian and that is all right. She is both Catholic and pre Christian, and we see no conflict with that. She had a good time with this altar and milagro business. She also enjoyed the art gallery. I always love to go up there, and am happy I had the chance to share it with someone who really found new meaning in an old practice through an ancient design left behind by a great artist.
My 9th great-grandfather made it across the Atlantic Ocean to arrive in the new world at the age of 8 months, in 1635. He was born in England and his grave can be found today, located in Boston. He graduated from Harvard College and became a minister. There are conflicting reports about his formal ordination, but no doubt that he was employed to teach religion. He also got to trade ammo and alcohol. He made his money selling liquor, powder, and shot. This paints a funny picture if you ask me, but I am prejudiced against much of the founding fathers’ behavior. Thomas was well respected in his time as a preaching ammo and alcohol dealer. I appreciate that he survived so I can be here today. It would have been very easy to die on the voyage from England as an infant, but he had a different destiny.
Thomas Crosby (1635 – 1702)
He graduated from Harvard College in 1653. Although never ordained, he was hired in 1655 to preach in the church at Eastham, MA and continued as minister succeeding Reverend John Mayo there until 1670 at a salary of 50 pounds per annum. Reverend Crosby was also engaged in trade and in 1664 was among those who kept for sale “liquor, powder and shot”.
Later, he became a merchant at Harwich, Mass., and while on a business trip to Boston was found dead in bed there, 13 June 1702, aged sixty-seven years. His inventory totalled £1091-16-0 with debts of £717-16-0, leaving a net estate of £374-0-0. His heirs divided his property by agreement, 8 Aug. 1705.Marriage 2 Sarah FITCH b: in Mass.1662Children Thomas CROSBY, Jr. b: 7 APR 1663 Sarah CROSBY b: 24 MAR 1666/67 Joseph CROSBY b: 27 JAN 1668/69 John CROSBY b: 4 DEC 1670 in Eastham, Massachusetts William CROSBY b: 16 MAR 1672/73 Ebenezer CROSBY b: 28 MAR 1675 Anne CROSBY b: 14 APR 1678 Mercy CROSBY b: 14 APR 1678Increase CROSBY b: 14 APR 1678 Eleazer CROSBY b: 31 MAR 1680When Thomas was eleven years of age and his brother Joseph was seven, they removed with their Mother to Braintree, a Village on the south side of Boston, Mass. now Quincy, after her marriage to the Rev. He seems to have been engaged as a religious teacher to carry on the Sabbath Service at a salary of 50 pounds. While at Eastham, he was engaged in a trade. He resided near the burying ground, a place he bought of Jonathan Sparrow in 1665. He removed to Harwich, about 1670, here he was also engaged in a trade. His widow, Sarah, the mother of his 12 children, m. Apr. 28, 1703, John Miller, of Yarmouth. He died in 1702 and has many descendants living in the vicinity of Cape Cod, Mass. He had a half-sister Anna, born in 1648.
In about 1662 he married Sarah Fitch. Their children born in Eastham, MA were: 1. Thomas born April 7, 1663, died May 21, 1731. 2. Simon born July 5, 1665, died 1718 3. After his death, his widow Sarah married John (2) Miller of Yarmouth on April 8, 1703, son of Reverend John and Lydia Miller.
Last week I was very excited to have tickets to attend a stage show in Providence called Good and Evil. This two man show stars Anthony Bourdain and another chef, Eric Rippert. Although I had no idea what to expect I thought it would be funny and entertaining. I even convinced a friend to go with me based on my expectations. The theater itself was completely amazing, and the music played before the show created a great warm up. I was super pleased to be there in the Providence Performing Arts Center ready to be entertained.
What ensued was anything but entertaining. These tragic egos insulted each other in turn, and then turned the vitriol on all other celebrity chefs. It was name dropping in the most useless way, only to insult and criticize. Bourdain went off insulting vegetarians saying that if you travel to a foreign place being vegetarian is offensive to all natives who do eat meat. Sorry, Tony, I was living in Venezuela in 1963, flying into Amazonian fishing camps where there were no people except remote native dwellers when you were in diapers. As an adult I have gone to third world places that you would never attempt without a TV crew and big budget. Speaking the language or attempting to communicate and be part of the scene is the important link. I have always been treated really well in the third world, and have never sensed any resentment from locals when I eat no meat. The Cubans were particularly happy not to have to procure meat for the outrageous dinner they made for me. The view you have created for yourself is false, creepy, and shows your imperialistic roots. Boorish is not endearing to anyone.
Tony, Tony, Tony, your tone is inappropriate, but the subject matter is tasteless. Without the trappings of the CNN crew and budget your personality is bitter and very tiny. I may be able to watch you travel and eat now, but I will never be able to respect you. Name drop and insult people in private. We, the public ( and former fans) do not need to know just how tragically toxic your liver actually is. Spew that toxic bile all over somebody in private if you must. It does not belong in a classy theater.
We had the best time at brunch yesterday with our neighbor Mindy. We arrived as service began and enjoyed wonderful attentive wait staff, a great ambiance, and most of all, delicious food. The Lodge on the Dessert is our new total favorite place to celebrate holiday meals. Christmas was good, and Easter perfect. I do not enjoy all you can eat buffet, or anything that resembles it. I don’t even want to see other people eating like that. Tucson’s Iron Chef, Ryan Clark, rocked the a la carte cuisine for the omnivores and also for me, a nice lacto-ov0 vegetarian girl. We were too full to finish our desserts, so we packed it to take home. As we headed out many families were arriving with eggs, baskets, kids and some darling fashion. We will be back..hungry.
True religion is a concept hard to grasp. The idea seems to be that divine providence has finally brought all wisdom and knowledge into the possession of one exclusive (chosen) group. This group, who thinks it is all that, persecutes other groups because they are not in possession of true religion. In some places one needs to handle snakes or fall down on the floor speaking in tongues to satisfy the veracity of one’s religion. In other places one only has to donate funds, and then is totally off the hook. True religions distinguish themselves by claiming not to be connected or influenced by religions in history. They often have dead or living prophets that rule the roost. In the south they also have radio shows. Sister Kelly uses her pulpit to explain how the Babylonian fertility and war goddess, Ishtar, got mixed up into Easter. Kelly McGinley of Mobile, Alabama wants to get to the bottom of all this history and evil.
Yes, Sister Kelly, there is an Ishtar, and her fertility symbols are used in a mixed metaphor called Easter. It is fine if you want to stay home while the rest of us go out to brunch and eat chocolate bunnies. We have no need to cast aspersions on your beliefs.
The relatively dead Charlton Heston is resurrected to play Ben Hur and Moses this time of the year. His public image at his death with his cold fingers wrapped around his gun have somehow surpassed that of the young buff actor who played these religious roles. He came to stand for the NRA, and the NRA has come to stand for a whole lot. Some old angry dude lent his celebrity to the NRA like Clint Eastwood did for the Republican party. Somehow an untarnished reputation as a pure actor seems more valuable to me than these actor endorsements of political positions. Their mothers told them that if they die in a political public outrage their face will freeze like that ( in the public memory). If Charlton is believable in Planet of the Apes, then he is not believable as a political voice of the people. We never should have allowed Ronnie and Nancy to ride out of Hollywood and into the White House, blurring the lines between politics and showbiz. At least Dame Edna shows the proper amount of respect.
I stand corrected about the spa culture in Pennsylvania. It is alive and well in Bedford Springs. The indoor and outdoor pools are heated with mineral spring water. The hotel, now operated by Omni, is an historic building as well as a health resort from another era. The historic Bedford Springs Hotel was a favorite of many presidents of the US. The healing waters were taken internally as well as used in bathing. The existence of 8 different sources makes this a very special location. The revival of the hotel to a glorious state of the art facility warms my heart, and will warm my body in September. I love to visit places that have been in continuous use as health resorts for centuries. They acquire a certain culture that is always interesting and usually healthy too.
As an historic landmark the hotel building has very specific restoration standards. They are exacting. A source of water was discovered during the renovation that is known as Spring Eternal. The new deluxe spa is named after this spring. The large property was purchased by Dr Anderson in 1796 for development as a health center. His approach included diet and exercise as well as use of the healing waters. The inclusion of local botanicals as well as the spring water is still part of the treatments at the fancy new facility. I look forward to taking a dip, wishing the live musicians were still playing at the indoor pool. There is even an herbal steam room..be still my heart.
The newest food craze is not called vegetarian, but plant-based diet. I listened to the interview on Marketplace with the CEO of Veggie Grill who is capitalizing on the trend. I noticed also in the news is the very trendy Engine 2 Diet in which real firemen show you how to quit eating meat. Firefighters are known to enjoy good food and being fit, so this image gets the attention of guys. I love all the new recipes and products one can try on the market. I even love the boot camps the Engine 2 peeps do at farms. The mother of them all will take place in New York in August. It will be called…you will not believe it…Plant stock. It will be followed be the Woodstock Fruit Festival.
Drugs are not the alternative now, since everyone is on prescriptions for virtually any small annoyance. Everyone is on drugs, so the alternative culture to take the stage for the youth today is raw vegan health food. Who would ever have thought this would happen? We should have known something was up when Bill Clinton became a vegan. I have been mostly vegetarian since 1969, with a few fishes eaten in the late 1970s. Frequently when fads catch up to me I drop them because it is dull by the time everyone does it. This time I am crazy about the fad, and embrace the young hippies with all their kale and juicers. They have a good idea, and it is catchy. I wish them luck as they try to make food last for the next set of eaters.
I have a sourdough start that has been living for about 5 years. I feed it potato water, sugar and potatoes to keep the yeast alive. The yeast lives in the air and will be different in each geographic location. Technically beer yeast and bread yeast are different strains, but they are both alive. The sourdough is a domesticated life form growing in my kitchen. Each time I make bread I take out half of the starter and add potatoes and sugar to the bowl. After it grows for a day or so I refrigerate it because I have no need to make bread every 24 hours. The ritual of making the bread and keeping the levain alive is important. Mine is unusual because I use no flour in the starter liquid.
Making and sharing food has deep significance. Not everyone has time or interest in bread baking or cooking as a sport, but everyone gets hungry. The way we deal with our appetites tells us something about our relationship to divine providence. To be too strict or picky results in loss of joy, whereas to be undiscriminating will have the exact same result. Culinary taste can and does vary greatly, but the full pleasure of dining is in the execution. The delightful MFK Fisher wrote before the advent of Food Network and the crush of celebrity chefs as entertainers. I have purchased tickets to see Anthony Bordain live on stage in Providence because he does the same schtick. His travel and dining adventures are metaphor fairy tale food stories. Once I saw that he and I will have traveled to the same city at the same time I knew I had to see his show Good and Evil, an obvious referral to food as life. He and I do not eat the same things, but we dine with the same attitude. I look forward to the evening with delight. It will be tasty.
