Redefining Wealth

December 17, 2012 3 Comments

If you have a mortgage on your home chances are good that a redefinition of your family’s wealth has swept through your reality. To evaluate risk you might have made the assessment that your home was a good investment. You might have accepted that without question and without comparison to liquid investments. You might have purchased your home during the wild and crazy time when the banks were riding high on the fake valuation they gave your home. You might have thought, like the banks did, that there would never be any reckoning for this obvious inflation of the truth.  This harsh reality may feel like a purposeful fraud that was executed on you without your participation.  The question to ask is ” Did I convince the bank I could afford this, or did the bank convince me?”  It does not matter.

What will make a meaningful difference is learning discernment from this kind of tragic error. The Elephant and Donkey Show is now at the point of considering taxing more heavily citizens of the US who make more than a million bucks a year.  I am so all over that if they tax the living daylights out of that group, and actually take their immunity through loophole out of the game. While the world watches America is hosting an epidemic of poverty and lawlessness that make some people believe the anti Christ is the American Dream.  Since Viet Nam the US has been sporting bravado rather than ethics.  Being the greatest country in the world does not involve more spin and PR than real greatness.  It involves adding value and kindness to the world by educating and caring for your own citizens.

Super Sandra Day O’Satya, Defender of the Highest Law

Supreme Daily Show

I idealize and adore Sandra Day O’Connor, so it was not really a surprise to find her as a super hero in my dream last night.  She was a super judge, which of course she is, but her super powers had expanded beyond the regular earthy ones. My visual recall of my dreams is still pretty crumby, but the ability to hold on the the basic story and characters is improving.  She could swoop in like Mighty Mouse or Batman.  She wore fashionable street clothes, not the  robe, but did have one of the little collar thingys they wear.  She had those same piercing baby blue eyes that had a spectrum of vision that showed her where the rule of law was being abused by the cranky pants people.

The cranky group was diverse and included cops and judges along with regular angry bird citizens (the one’s we think might shoot somebody).  The judge archetype seeks to balance justice and compassion.  The shadow judge manifests as destructive criticism, judging without compassion, as misuse of legal authority, or threatening others through association with the law.  Sandra Day was angelic and gave darshan and peace to the cranky panted ones.  She had a clarity about her, as one might expect from  cross between a real life Supreme and my dream judge/ justice avenger.  She restored order like Jesus healed the sick.  She had no props, no wand, no sleigh, just the truth.  She was so brilliant that she enlightened the darkness in all the hearts she touched.  What she did have in common with Santa was a need to keep moving because there was so much clarity, justice, and compassion to be distributed to all the good little girls and boys. By  applying  exactly the same fair and equal treatment to all the bad little girls and boys she proved that she was so beyond Supreme.

In real life Sandra Day and I are both Arizona hotties, although she is a Phoenician.  She is co chair of  an institute to foster civility in Tucson at the U of A.  Her reputation for civility is epic, not that unlike my dream Super Supreme Sandra.  Her favorite poem in real life tells her secret to Supremehood ( and SuperSupremehood):

Sometime when you’re feeling important;
Sometime when your ego’s in bloom
Sometime when you take it for granted
You’re the best qualified in the room,

Sometime when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions
And see how they humble your soul;

Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hand in it up to the wrist,
Pull it out and the hole that’s remaining
Is a measure of how you will be missed.

You can splash all you wish when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop and you’ll find that in no time
It looks quite the same as before.

The moral of this quaint example
Is do just the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself but remember,
There’s no indispensable man.

[Saxon N. White Kessinger, There is No Indispensable Man (1959).]

How simple.  These instructions, followed regularly can easily lead to civil discourse. This Supreme’s got SOUL. Let us all wish her luck on her nocturnal flights through the universe. Hi- Ho, SuperSandra, away.  Let’s assume that this poem is the gift she wants us all to use while she is busy fighting injustice.

Intuition, Archetypes, Ancestors

December 15, 2012

Historical enemies, sagas of war, and the tragic impact violent thoughts have on society today are harsh reminders of human disorder. We can not look back to find a perfect time in history or a completely noble story of our ancestors’ survival. The mixed bag has always existed, known and unknown, true and false. When evil rocks the world we are all quick to isolate culprits and round up perps in our own minds. It does not matter which demon we blame, even if we never mention it out loud. The very act of deciding who is to blame will be a process to eliminate knowledge of one’s own part in building a more hateful world. The question of the moment is “Who started this?”, but we all know intuitively the answer to that eternal question.

The prostitute archetype in each of our dramas will test and be tested to discover ethics and limits. The question will be answered in this lifetime about how blind you are to others in order to enhance your own comfort. This story will star your prostitute archetype. Your storyboard will be repeated in different costumes and sets until the line has been firmly established between your soul and what you are willing to do for physical comfort. You may find it is an opera one time and a comedy the next, but if you look back you can identify the segments like vignettes on the Twilight Zone. You created and produced these stories to find your limits. Your own unconscious mind has written, directed, and been in charge of casting the stars. There are sometimes entire decades of reruns. I feel that our nation has been rerunning an unfortunate version of our best selves with less than admirable results.

Greek Senate

Greek Senate

I watched an excellent program on the history channel about the use of drugs in history. During the discussion of ancient Greece they showed the Senate (from the same word as senility) being fumigated with herbs before they met to discuss matters. The Greeks hot boxed the lawmakers in the chamber with hallucinogenic herbs to make them cordial.  How have we not thought of this?  How did this practice ever disappear?  These people invented classic.  Why has the CIA not been given a mission to find the fumigation recipe they used?

We know they are all on a number of pharmaceuticals, mind and soul altering drugs with disastrous side effects.  We know that they can not distinguish between health care and wellness.  We know we do not trust them with our money, and they have our money.  I say we dose them, gentle readers, and NOT with their own medicine.  It is time for a major toga party on the hill.

Superhero, Satyameister, Slayer of Mendacity

The world is full of mythical beings. Some of them are art rendered by comic book or animation experts. Some are created simply by stereotyping everyone and everything.  That guy is both mythical and all too real.  I notice that some are not attracted to the concept of personal branding, while others embrace the  on line chance to portray themselves as much better than they actually are.  There are many who use our new digital instant PR machine to broadcast how miserable they are.  It all boils down to attracting the kind of attention that you want to attract.  The digital world of communication mimics the physical world by the giving and receiving of attention.  Attention takes time and shows the quality of the identification that has been made.  When an artist creates a new superhero it is imperative to know what kind of attention the character will solicit.  For some reason this kind of scrutiny is not given to the image people project of themselves.

Through the clutter and the noise of endless status updates and offers, very few personal brands ring true.  I like the joke that says Facebook is where you lie to your friends, and twitter is where you tell the truth to strangers but nobody cares in either case.  The imperative to build an image requires that one question be asked.  That question is, “What kind of attention do I want?’  The most common attempts are to solicit envy and or pity in an alternating way.  These both work very well if one wants to find like-minded personal brands.  If you want to stand out and be noticed for a positive attribute, you need to know what that is and honestly live in the reality you claim to be yours.  The job requires self examination as well as craft, editing, and artistry.

I entered the wold of social media by listening to the book Trust Agents, a clear mandate to listen more than you propose.  I am now reading the sequel, Impact Equation, which amplifies and expands on the original message.  The overview and function of the entire communications system is what enlightens us in this latest book.  Brother Brogan is my own bodhisattva of digital darshan. Maybe I bonded with him so much as my first teacher who instructed me on how to enter this strange new world.  Maybe he is my superhero because I have never played a video game or felt the need to understand why and how people game.  He loves tech and gaming in ways will never interest me, but he does not hang his hero hat on the gaming hook.  He finds common ground by keeping a very tight relationship with the truth.  He models Satya for the cosmic and decidedly digital age in which we live and express ourselves.  His avi wears an outfit not unlike Superman’s own, but the S in his case stands for  Satya.  I know as a teacher myself that all students do not match all instruction.  Style is a strong link that can hold attention for a short time.  The teaching must contain truth, however, to hold the student’s deep attention.  I am completely into the idea of Chris flying through my dreams in his truth suit, fighting sketchy versions of reality.  Satyameister has my attention.  There is much to learn.

Mollie's prayer shawl

Mollie’s prayer shawl

I was in temple yesterday much longer than I might have liked. This time, however, Rabbi Frank rocked the universe with his profound statements about Shabbat. The need to rest and restore is a universal requirement for anyone who wants to attain a spiritually inspired life. The Jewish practice of turning away from the worldly work and habits for 24 hours a week is a basic way to tune in to divine guidance regularly. If this is never done, people become convinced that they are completely at cause for everything that happens, and must work harder to control outcomes. Nothing could be more delusional.

The phrases he used were poetic and charged with symbolism. This is the kind of wording that sticks in the mind of listeners. I paraphrase his message here: For 6 days we live in the world of time, one day we step out of time and live in space. For 6 days we deal with all the creations of the world. For one day we deal with the world of creation. For me, this was a stellar explanation of the need to reverse the flow of that everyday grind to find inner guidance. If you think of God the creator in heaven, or believe you are a creative part of the universe, always guided by eternal grace, the concept is still powerful. Be still and know.  Go Rabbi Frank.

Apathy, the Mother of All Crime

fledgling hawk at the condo village

We know there is fraud and corruption all around us. We are aware that we pay these highly disputed tax dollars to government employees less than interested in serving the public. We know laws are broken all the time because there is not even a tiny itsy bitsy effort to enforce them. I am not sure why we have so many (but that is another subject) if they are all just recorded somewhere in case lawyers need to use them. The public believes that somehow having cops is having law enforcement, but this highly simplistic notion is every criminal’s best friend. People allow bold and disgusting crime to happen before their very eyes without trying to stop it just because apathy is so strong that they are basically controlled by it. There is no expectation that our surroundings can be kept crime free, but rather a new normal of home security and paranoid, anti social collection of weaponry.  Full disclosure, I live in Arizona, so I am speaking about my own ‘hood.

I live in a condo village that looks like a fake Taos Pueblo in central Tucson.  There are only 30 homes, a pool, a jacuzzi and a small guest parking area.  For the last 10 years the HOA board has had the same two members every year.  They return to office, even though they are not even known to most residents or owners by keeping completely out of touch.  They meet without any interaction with the other homeowners, send a paper newsletter with vague and meaningless report of the meeting in the mail, and  continue to survive in this isolated way because they discovered apathy.  When one of them celebrated the death of her father by stealing $50 from our dues money and making a donation to a hospice in her father’s name, I called to inform her stealing dues money  is both disgusting and illegal.  She hung up on me.  I learned by asking for neighbors to help get them out of office that the most important element of life for them is denial and ignorance about what is happening in the real estate market and in their surroundings.  I reported the theft of the $50 to the attorney general of AZ who responded that they did not handle such cases.  I inquired at the city council office to locate the office that could handle this crime.  The real estate department no longer helps HOAs with crime infested boards, and the fire department is now in some way attached, but there is no resolution other than to get the homeowners to get the stolen money returned. The homeowners’ prime goal was continued apathy, so that was not workable.

They continued in office and started running a charity scam in our public areas.  They solicit food, money , and any kind of junk to their keep the homeless outside campaign.  They do not believe in supporting the existing shelters and non profits that serve the homeless community.  They believe in trashing the environment of their neighborhood, and some other neighborhood with a public park, in order to feed the homeless outside like animals.  They think they are entitled to run a charity scam blocking our driveways and driving down the price of our real estate value because they know that apathy will protect them.  They have run this operation for years in broad daylight begging on the internet for donations.  I have reported the crime to the IRS, AZ revenue, the County Health Dept, the Ward 3 council office, and of course the TPD.  None of these entities cares if we have a charity scam operating in our neighborhood.  Neither do the owners of the homes that have lost more than half of their value while these board members made this special jurisdiction for themselves in our public areas. The neighborhood watch cop tells a story of neighbors watching a house be cleared out by thieves, but never report it because nobody knows their neighbors.  Here, the homeowners sat silently inside their own homes while their very own property value and quality of life  was willfully destroyed and decided that it must be fate.  I own a lot across the street from the HOA property with a rising value, while these home values have sunk like rocks. Foreclosure has come and stayed.

I do not believe in competing unfairly with legitimate non profits that need all the help they can get today.  It is easy to pitch in, volunteer, or donate to many worthy and wholesome programs that assist the homeless, rather than demean them ( and possibly give them food poisoning) in a public park.  I would think that most people would be grossed out by this, but strangers drive through and donate junk without thinking, “What am I doing in a residential condo village blocking the fire lane to do my charity work ?”  But then, those people are just dropping off a few old socks they no longer want.  The homeowners have been willing to loose their socks just to stay apathetic.
