Pandora and box
The myth of Pandora is a Greek creation story. Zeus ordered Hephaestus (blacksmith of the gods) to make the first woman. He did this using water and earth. Her name means all gifted because various gods gifted her with talents. She was married to Epimethius as a major prank. She was designed to punish disobedient humans. She was irresistible. She arrived with a box which was not to be opened. We know the part of the story in which she does open the box and evil and suffering escapes. In fact, evil runs rampant on earth as a result of Pandora’s weakness of curiosity. She has something in common with Eve, the first woman who just had to try the forbidden fruit in the garden.
When Pandora sees that she has released illness and evil on the earth she attempts to close the box quickly. In the original story she came with a jar (pithos). Later translations from the Greek changed the jar to a box. Either way, she managed to close the container with hope trapped inside. I feel this myth is pertinent to our world situation today. The evil, the misery, the illness has been released into our atmosphere. It is swirling all around us everywhere. Hope is often obscured, as if it is enclosed in some secret vessel.

I am listening to the book Originals by Adam Grant. This audio book is the second of my free treats in the 3 month Audible subscription I have initiated. I am employing Alexa in the Echo to read the book to me at home. When I go to the gym I switch to the iPod or iPad for a workout. The system knows how to bookmark my last page and start in that spot without a hitch. This is fun for now, but I don’t see myself keeping the membership for the extra $15 a month. You still have to purchase the audio books beyond that basic dues payment. I like it as a temporary novelty, but I still have some of my favorite books on audio CD, which is the only way I can listen in my car.
I love the theory as well as the writing in this book. The way originality develops and makes change possible in the world is a subject this author has studied from many perspectives. His many concrete examples of entrepreneurs who both fail and succeed to execute meaningful change help the reader understand how power and status quo operate. The common beliefs that great risk and speed are the keys to cultural change are disproven with real stories. Procrastination may well be the innovator’s best friend. By waiting for the first line to fail in various ways, the second line is an a much better position to correct mistakes while proving the need for the same innovations. “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives, and in his own household.” Mark 6:4
Birth order and other lifestyle factors are studied as possible catalysts for becoming a meaningful leader. Groupthink is the enemy of originality. When non-conformists are able to use influence to create a change in culture, in business or in politics, it is because the original has learned to open a cultural mentality, destroying the myth of the cult. Even in our fast-changing world with innovation running copiously toward individualization status quo is still the strongest force.

Hildegard was born in 1098 in Bermersheim vor der Höhe, County Palatine of the Rhine, Holy Roman Empire. She died on17 September 1179 (aged 81) at Bingen am Rhein, County Palatine of the Rhine, Holy Roman Empire. She is venerated in Roman Catholic Church (Order of St. Benedict), Anglican Communion, and Lutheranism. She was canonized 10 May 2012 (equivalent canonization), Vatican City by Pope Benedict XVI. Her major shrine is Eibingen Abbey in Germany. Her parents gave her as an oblate to a Benedictine order when she was a child. She had visions before being enclosed in in order on All Saint’s Day, 1112.
She learned to read and write, wrote three books of visionary theology, and preached throughout the Rhineland during her lifetime. She was exceptional for her time, and her work still shines as poetry inspired by divine mysticism. She wrote music, created a written language, and was the author of what might have been the first morality play. Her place in history remains because of her prolific recorded work. She left us 70 poems and 9 books. She wrote music and was an accomplished artist. She recorded medical and pharmaceutical texts that are consulted and studied today. I know of pharmacies in Europe that offer her original formulas today. She wrote letters to popes, bishops and nuns that survive. We are lucky she learned to write, a rare privilege for a woman at that time. Her profound teachings apply to us now more than ever. The world needs mystics and visionaries to lift us out of this material rut in which we find ourselves. We all need to learn to be feathers on the breath of God. We are too dependent on the earth, and have forgotten to look up to the heavens for eternal blessings. What did she say about this?

My 7th great-grandfather was born in Massachusetts, but moved with his parents to Rhode Island as baby. His father was a judge and prominent Quaker in Rhode Island after being driven out of Salem for religious differences. The family quit the Puritan Church and joined the Quaker Church. We have a copy of his will.

Eber was the son of the immigrant Philip Sherman and his wife, Sarah Odding. Secondary sources say Eber was born in Roxbury, Mass. December 1634; however, a “Heber Sherman” cosigned a deed in Portsmouth, RI on 1 March 1649 [/50?], and if that was this individual, then Eber would have been born no later than 1629. He d. N. Kingstown, RI 1706, and married late in life. c. 1677 Mary, b. c. 1650, living in Oct 1719 when named in the will of Eber’s brother, Peleg Sherman. Mary, in many sources, has been called the daughter of Edward Wilcox, but that Mary was born about 1639, and would be too old to be the mother of Eber’s younger children.
In his 1968 genealogy of the Sherman family, Roy V. Sherman asserts that Eber had another wife named Sophia Brown. If this is the case, then Sophia would have been a first wife, since Mary was the widow of Eber in 1719.
Though Eber grew up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island where his father settled, by 1670 he was living across the Narragansett Bay in Pettaquamscutt (now S. Kingstown), where he and four others were appointed to set a tax rate. In 1687 he was taxed in Kingstowne (which was spilt between North and South in 1722).
Eber’s will was proved in (North) Kingstown on 13 Nov 1706. Alden Beaman provided a good rendition of this family in his Rhode Island Genealogical Register, vol. 9, pages 1-12. However, I take exception to the son Stephen being placed as one of the older children, because he was the last of the children to marry. I have therefore re-arranged the children slightly from Beaman’s account. Children:
- Eber, b. c. 1678, d. N. Kingstown 1758 (year his will was proved), and m. c. 1706 Martha REMINGTON, b. c. 1683, living in 1744 when named in her mother’s will, the daughter of John Remington and Abigail Richmond. On 13 Dec 1718, Eber and Martha sold land to Henry Gardiner (the second husband of Martha’s mother). Eber witnessed a will in S. Kingstown, RI 24 July 1725 (RIGR 6:83). Eber and Martha had seven known children born 1707 to 1724. Beer’s will, dated 1757, was proved in 1758, naming children John, Henry, William, and probably others whose names were lost. The burial location for Eber and Martha has not been determined, but they may be buried in the ancient Sherman Lot in N. Kingstown, Hist Cem #133. This is where Eber’s brother William is buried, and where the second wife of his brother Stephen is likely buried. Find-a-grave memorials have been created for Eber and Martha without a cemetery.
- Samuel, b. c. 1680; administration of his estate was given to his brother Eber on 14 Sep 1742, so without wife or children he probably did not marry, or once had a wife but no surviving children.
- Peleg, b. c. 1682, d. 1752, married c. 1714, and had five children born in N. Kingstown, but wife’s name was lost from burning of records. Peleg’s will was proved in Exeter, RI 6 May 1752. He had five children born 1715 to 1725.
- Elisha, b. c. 1685, d. N.Kingstown 1750, and m. c. 1715 Mary SWEET, b. N. Kingstown 8 Dec 1696, d. there 1775, daughter of Benoni Sweet and Elizabeth Manchester. They had nine known children born 1716 to 1735.
- Mary, b. 26 June 1688, m. c. 1714 James SWEET, b. 28 May 1687, d. 19 July 1751, son of Benoni Sweet and Elizabeth (Manchester?). They had nine children born 1715 to 1729.
- William, b. c. 1690, living 20 Sep 1757 when he deeded land in N. Kingstown, m. c. 1716 Abigail PALMER, b. 1796, living in 1757 when she cosigned a deed with her husband, the daughter of Edward Palmer. Abigail was baptized, late in life, on 9 July 1752, in her 57th year at St. Paul’s Church of Narraganset, by immersion in Pettasquamscutt Pond. William and Abigail had eleven children born 1717 to 1737. William and Abigail are said to be buried in the Sherman Lot, Hist Cem NK #133, where several of their descendants are buried.
- Stephen, b. c. 1693, d. 1773, m. (1) c. 1721 Sarah Freeman. b. say 1700, d. c. 1728; (2) at his home in N. Kingstown 18 Oct 1730 Margaret Hackstone, b. say 1695, d. 17 Nov 1748 and buried in Sherman Burial Yard on 18 Nov (per St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Records as abstracted in the Gen Dict RI, v. 10); (3) Exeter 15 July 1749 Giffie Sweet. b. c. 1705, living in 1772 when mentioned in her husband’s will. Stephen’s will, dated 29 Feb 1772, was proved at N. Kingstown 3 Sep 1773. Stephen had four children with his first wife, born 1722 to 1727 and five more with his second wife, born 1731 to c. 1739.
- Abigail, b. c. 1695, named as one of the children by John Austin in his Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island, but I find no record of her.
What is a Paddleout?

Surf culture is unique and specific to the location. Surfers know each other by hanging out on the same breaks. Today I saw a circle of boards out beyond the break. My friend told me this was a paddleout, a surfer funeral. As we walked down the beach we saw many others people in attendance for the service. There was health food catering, Hawaiian music, flowers, leis, and a special place of honor for the deceased guy’s grandmother. I had never seen anything like this. The people gathered with a reverence for nature as well as for their dead friend. The ceremony involved gathering on the boards, perhaps setting a lei or some flowers out to sea. They may have dropped his ashes. Then the surfers spread out to catch waves in to the shore to join those on the beach. It was beautiful. This was a fitting tribute by his surfer friends, and a perfect way to honor his life.
Surfers are focused. They just don’t mind the hassles or the schlepping it takes to catch a wave. Some devote their lifestyle completely to the sport. Most need to make some money on the side so they can afford to surf the rest of the time. There is a strong sense of community that keeps them all afloat. I feel lucky to have witnessed this sweet and meaningful goodbye. It contrasts sharply with the typical funeral home event. I am considering learning to surf just so I can have one of these when I go. This sublime symbolic gesture says more to me than any religious ceremony could offer.

I am pumped, gentle readers. I am embarking on a road trip to one of my favorite destinations on earth. I love Cardiff-by- the-Sea, California. This suburb of Encinitas has everything I want in a destination…..beautiful beach, a classic biker dive bar with great rock and roll ( right across the street from the beach), and many good friends who live in the area of North County San Diego.
The Kraken
At home in Tucson I rarely go out and night and have not been out dancing for ages. The music at the Kraken usually suits me to a T, and there is no need to choose a partner in order to dance. It is not that kind of bar. It is a bar for locals, bikers, and everyone who wants to preserve 1975 for eternity…..my kind of place. I have found an Airbnb accommodation that has everything I every hoped for in an accommodation. I can park ( this is a very big deal in this neighborhood) and walk 5 blocks to the beach and/or the Kraken and walk right back up the hill to go home. I will have a balcony with an ocean view ( pretty excited about that aspect).
The big event of the weekend is a Bar Mitzvah celebration for my good friend’s son, Ben Levy. After the service we will go to a trampoline park in Vista for the party. This will be the best Bar Mitzvah party I have attended…I know already. I am really into trampolines, and not that into your typical after Bar Mitzvah party. I have attended my share, but never been offered a chance to trampoline. Go Benny, what a great decision!!!!!!! I will be very happy to share your special trope and tramp day with you and the family. California, here I come!

I have been interested in astronomy as well as astrology since I was very young. We went to the Buhl Planetarium when I was a child, and I loved every minute of my time there. I was lucky that my family frequently went, as well as school classes and Brownie troops. I became a regular. I have a vivid memory of the giant pendulum and the big Tesla coil. I had my own Tesla coil at home (aka cattle prod) which I used to replicate some of the shows we saw at the planetarium. It thrilled me to shoot sparks from my fingertips and make my friends’ hair stand on end.
I had my first astrology chart written when I was about 25, but I don’t know what happened to it. I have learned more on the subject of astrology as I turned my attention to medical history and folk medicine. Until recently (and still now in many places) a good physician would take note of the heavens and use their powers to enhance healing. Old pharmacies in Europe still have the astrological signs as decorative and symbolic art used in the design of the interior and sometimes exterior of the buildings. They often have a water fountain shaped like a healing snake as well, for taking one’s medicine. I have read about both Chinese and western astrology, but have not learned much on the subject of vedic astrology, an Indian version said to be very interesting. I don’t live my whole life by it, but I observe the changes in the sky and notice what seems to be happening. Tomorrow we will have a most auspicious new moon in Leo with the sun in Leo, and my birth sign planet, Uranus, in retrograde. What in the world will this mean?
As I am digging out more and more stuff to discard I found an original document (my baby book) that shows my time of birth as 10:01 am, rather than the 11 am I had always used. I quickly called the astrologer who did my most recent chart, Dr Loretta Sandley, and had a quick consultation. I still have Aires rising but all the houses have shifted. I am no expert. I relay on the diagrams to better understand my chart. Now all my internal geometry has changed!!!! I ordered a new birth chart with my revised birth time and will very soon receive my new diagrams. She gives very detailed information, and I look forward to comparing it all to the one I have been using for so many years. Dr. Loretta gave me some very good hints in our conversation, which I have contemplated since, but I will need the visual before I can start to digest the difference.
