This summer I designed a home spa program for myself with an emphasis on positive change. My staycation planning evolved from the original agenda in ways I had not expected. I thought I was in a very artful groove, and needed self expression as a top priority.  I listed poetry writing and art as a daily therapy for wholeness because I know these practices do make me healthier.  For reasons not yet fully examined my poet and artist have been dormant with no interaction.  I have taken a few photos, but what I saw as my big chance to work on my creativity with words and visuals has been channeled in other directions.

I have become a food prepper in my own way.  I don’t attempt to pack or create meals for a whole week in one day as the real serious preppers on Pinterest do.  I have learned from them to make my own diet healthier by planning and using contrast.  My style of food prep involves a constant experimentation and learning new recipes.  I have been trying many salad dressings and cold soups that are new to me.  I am making a conscious effort to include anti inflammatory foods such as ginger and turmeric in my diet.  I am on a huge tea safari of new flavors and types of tea, a journey that will take a lifetime.  This summer I have given up coffee and never miss it because I drink tea, often spiked with ginger tea to keep the anti inflammation theme.  I have tried more new dishes and teas in the last two months than I did in the previous year.  I am hopping enthusiastically out of my culinary rut.  I feel good, and find great satisfaction in mastering new cuisines.  This afternoon I am making mango chutney for the first time.  I might even make an attempt at curry.  Who knows where the food muse will lead?

The most successful element of summer spa is the trend toward minimalism.   If you knew me in the past you knew one of the biggest maximalists that ever lived on earth.  I did everything with way too much over production.  I accumulated mass quantities of stuff I never used, and crammed my space with items.  I made decisions earlier that have cleaned up much of my act, and I continue to go in this direction.  Each time I have the opportunity to donate to the Big Brothers Big Sisters, who provide pick up service, I gather a big bag and leave it outside.  Each time I find things that have not been used in years and have little chance of being used.  The upgrade is fabulous.  I now own…and can find easily in my clean clear space…only things I love.  I am in no hurry to fill the space with more items, since I still have more than I really need.

My exercise routine has been enhanced by the free Apple music subscription I am enjoying. I dance around my house for 5 miles in the morning listening to Apple music.  By tracking I see that I dance at almost the same pace as I walk outside. My air conditioned house is much more comfortable now than it is outside.  The Apple library is vast, so I switch albums and playlists all the time, never listening to the same thing twice.  I don’t believe I will cover everything I want to hear in three months, but for now I am having a very good time with it. The good news is that the minimalist in me does not need that giant library and will not mind at all returning to the very big library at Amazon music.  I highly recommend that everyone take them up on the free offer just to see how much is available.  Even minimalists like free stuff.

Saraswati’s Gift

The Hindu goddess Saraswati represents creativity and artful expression.  Her role as an educator in the arts is combined with her inspirational qualities.  She once was a river in India, so her fluidity is natural.  Art turns emotional states into keen statements.  She is a guide to bring artfulness to all aspects of living.  Her inventive spirit sheds new light on the creative process.  She is popular in India today.  I enjoy seeing all the ways she is depicted.  She rides a swan and plays music.  Her influence is uplifting and encouraging, helping you to locate your muse.  You can invite her into your dreams and meditation in subtle ways.  I like to use a visualization which is a combination of some of my favorite techniques rolled into one:

  • I imagine a hill with a stairway that I climb.  The length of the climb varies each time I do the meditation.  My stairs are always spiraling around the hill, and I am usually on an island where I can see the surf.  Your own details will be different from mine.
  • At the top of the stairs is a temple with pillars and special light. It feels like a sanctuary built just for me.  I stand in the center of the round temple and observe the doorways through which I can exit.  I ask Saraswati to join me in the center.
  • When she has arrived she guides me to a door and leads me down a hallway to a room with a skylight made of stained glass.  This room is even more personal and specific to my needs than the outer temple.  I sit in here to meditate.
  • Before leaving I ask Saraswati for a gift to take back to my regular life.  This mysterious part of the visualization is the heart of the matter.  She gifts me with symbolic items that are designed to spur my intuition, imagination, and creativity.  Initially the items may seem to have no pertinence, but if you let the images soak in you will find meaning in them.
  • I thank her and start walking back the way I came, back into my waking reality.

This exercise does not need to include Hindu deities if that disturbs your sensibilities.  It may be too much for you to think of hanging out with a goddess riding a swan.  This same sequence will work well if you go to the temple and choose any entity, alive or dead, to join you and give you a gift.  In reality you are both yourself and the gift giver in this program. The insight comes when you grasp the meaning of the gift and are able to use it to be more inventive and artful.

 

Adding Comedy for Balance

Earlier in the year I made a plan to provide a spa vacation to myself without leaving town this summer.  My dog needs me frequently, and the heat is now upon us, so the stay in town has evolved into stay home in the air-conditioning most of the time.  I am happy I had started with a plan because the dog care giving could be a depressing situation without it.  She is resting most of the time without any apparent pain.  I spoke to my cousin this week who is dealing with the end of life issues of her dad. This conversation reminded me how, although the loss is sad and similar, the parent care is a lot more complicated than pet care. I am lucky to have the time and means to be able to stay home with my dog to make her comfortable. I have made some changes to my original plan:

  • My workout audio is a mix from Amazon Prime Music.  I have added all the comedy albums available to my library.  This is a great lift. As I dance around my living room in the morning I use music to inspire, but the comedy makes me laugh out loud.  If you have not tried adding comedy to your exercise routine don’t knock it. I love it.
  • Hulu watch list- I do Hulu every few months and then freeze my account because I already enjoy all the shows from Amazon Prime free of ads.  While the subscription is active I binge on history documentaries, British detective shows, and lots of comedy.  There are a few shows I think are very funny, like Moone Boy, an Irish sitcom, that I can only find on Hulu.  I also really love all the stand up available. I started my month last week and am fully taking advantage of it.

What has been working well at my stay at home spa is the fun with food prep and the use of helpful apps that track my movement and pace.  I started using Endomondo while I was still walking outside each morning.  It uses GPS to measure distance and speed.  I find that my speed dancing a mile is the same as walking outside for a mile.  The fitbit has been very helpful to increase my sleep at night, even though I get up for the dog many times.  I now use honey to deepen my sleep.  By trying the honey method I have increased the average time I sleep each night.  This is a very important aspect of keeping my mood positive.  With enough movement and enough sleep I can withstand all kinds of stress.

I am also taking advantage of this time to be creative in my own kitchen.  I am making new recipes and trying new techniques I have learned from the food preppers.  I made refrigerator pickles for the first time.  This could be a really fun little hobby as well as a tasty way to keep food from spoiling.  I am also working my way through all the chilled soups that look good to me. I have time to write, read, to work on my family history, or do whatever feels good at the time. This too shall pass, but for now I am making it work and reminding myself of the comedy and creativity available to us in life.

Fitness Feedback, The Sleep Monitor

The systems now available to measure and monitor health are mind blowing.  This slice of health care/technology is growing more popular each day.  I started using Fitbit last fall to increase my movement.  It is effective motivation to see performance increase over time, complete with graphs.  I recently became most interested in the sleep measuring ability of my little wrist band.

As you can see I am frequently awakened during the night. My dog needs to go out and I must  walk down a flight of stairs to do the task, so it does disturb my slumber.  I am working this week to push back towards longer deeper sleep by using honey.  Last night on the 3rd trip down with the dog I drank a shot of honey and warm milk, which seemed to work pretty well.  I am also napping after lunch when possible because at that time I zonk out easily.  I do not pay for the advanced membership to Fitbit that provides constant reports and comparisons to your age group in the population.  However, I am taking advantage of the offer to create a one week report for free.  My results will be final on Saturday, and graphed.  I feel very competitive and funny about this challenge.  I want to see an improvement in my sleep in one week.  This may prove to be irrational as a goal, but I am still trying it.  I wonder if I can will myself to be a better sleeper in the long run. Over the last three days I have managed to increase my total time, but without the naps it would not have been the case.  This is one challenge for which gearing up is against my better interests.  How does one become a sleep champion?

Sleep Quality, Honey Hibernation

Sleeping has always been easy for me. I fall asleep quickly when I am tired, and normally sleep through noise and disturbances that bother others. For the last few months I am challenged to get a full night of rest because my dog needs to go out several times during the night.  Once I have walked down the stairs and let her out for a few minutes my patterns  have been disturbed.  I have been searching for a remedy that fits this situation.  I don’t want a sleep aid, even melatonin, because I do need to wake up for the chore.  I am doing research into various ways to enhance or deepen sleep.  In the meantime my fitbit reads my sleep efficiency.  It reports the number of times awakened, and the time spent sleeping.  My rate normally ranges between 79% and 85%, but last night I hit 73% sleep efficiency, with 23 times awakened.  I need to take action to save my sanity.

Last week I read about honey hibernation.  I have tried it several times and it seems to work.  Sometimes I neglect to do it before retiring, but take the honey on my first trip downstairs with the dog.  I think it might help me fall back into deep sleep.  I am going to start a real experiment with the honey method to find out if it is making a significant difference.  I have asked for a 7 day sleep report from fitbit and will now be religious about taking my son full of honey at 6 pm daily.  Last night I got 57 minutes less sleep than I need.  I did nap today, which I think is a fine solution to the overall rest situation, but I want a sound restful night  as well.  I have used self hypnosis in the past.  That might be useful for my purpose, but I will see if I need more help, after a week of honey.  Have you tried this method, gentle reader?  It is for weight loss and better liver function, but a side effect is better sleep.  I am up for all of the above, especially if it is all that easy.

 

Mythic Dreams

Symbols in dreams are personal.  We dream only of faces we have seen before, even if we are barely familiar with the person.  The character, or archetype played by the face depends completely on personal experience.  Dream dictionaries and aids to interpret meaning found in dreams can only make references to universal archetypes.  To grasp the personal message brought to the dreamer the images themselves must be savored and visited in waking time.  Writing in a diary upon awaking before moving or engaging in the activities of the day is helpful. By keeping these notes on a regular basis you may discover themes that you can identify in a personal way.

Sometimes at crossroads in life a person will receive a vivid memorable message during sleep. The images and meaning of mythic dreams are significant beyond the every day way the unconscious communicates. The protagonists in the drama make a deep impression that lasts and speaks to the psyche for a long time. Carl Jung identified seven basic archetypes making appearances in dream time.

  1. The persona- the mask or personality you present to the public, your image
  2. The shadow- everything that is hidden in your personality, the unknown you
  3. The anima/animus- the masculine/feminine nature of your being, your sexuality
  4. The divine child- you in perfect innocence, uncomplicated childlike self
  5. The wise woman/man-wizardry and wisdom, a figure of authority and gravitas
  6. The great mother- the maternal nurturing quality that cares for life, provides
  7. The trickster- shows the error or the joke at the heart of the matter, points to poor judgement or precarious situations

Loaded images and story lines float through our heads while we sleep.  If we have a problem on the mind it is possible to solve it during a dream.  Practice and meditation on our own dream images will make clearer the point of the communication. Our subconscious warns us, encourages us, and sometimes tells us we are foolish.  It is never straightforward, but over time we can dig more deeply into the messages our dreams deliver on a nightly basis.  Have you ever kept a dream diary, gentle reader?  Have you ever had a mythic dream that changed your thinking?

In business clients have many choices. They can patronize establishments that consistently recognize them, treat them with respect and value their patronage. Some people like to know they are paying the lowest prices for everything they buy, without regard to quality.  The service aspect is less important to these folks.   Utilitarian objects are valuable if they last, require little care, and are simple to operate.  Environments in which people spend time like stores, salons, restaurants, hotels, or spas, are delivering a designed experience beyond the consumer goods they offer for sale.  They offer a feeling of being important and unique.  I believe the difference between average service and stellar service is attention to the importance of the customer’s special preferences.  This might sound basic, but think about times when you feel happy because everything is just the way you like it to be.  When services are applied with a broad brush, one size fits all, the result is rarely satisfying to the recipient.  Some minor as well as major attention must be paid to how the customer likes to proceed in order to create a service that customer will value highly.

I like to know that my service providers of all kinds are professional.  I can tell right off the bat because showing up on time is the first way to impress me that my business is center of attention.  Manners matter.  Punctuality, as well as finishing on target, are part of the customer service tool kit.  I remember those providers who make me wait without a call or explanation of the tardiness.  They do not get invited to return to my house.  On the other hand once I find a professional, punctual, polite provider my loyalty is fierce.  I don’t shop around for lower prices when I am pleased with the services I receive.  I will happily pay a little extra to know that my job will be done with pride.

When I need to call on a warranty for a service or product I am always impressed if that repair or replacement is done quickly and well.  I sent back a Bunn coffee maker three times while under warranty.  I now have that third model for years, working perfectly.  I was very pleased when they sent me new ones without hesitation along with a Fedex prepaid voucher to send the broken one back for investigation.  I will probably be a Bunn customer for life both for the product quality and the customer relationship. I feel the same way about my health club, my contractor, mechanic, and massage therapists.  As a consumer I am particular, but not hard to please. Once I have found a match that works well for me I stick with it.  What kind of customer are you, gentle reader?  Are you more loyal or adventurous?

I became a vegetarian at Union Grove, North Carolina in March of 1970.  I had travelled with a group of friends to camp over Easter weekend at my first fiddler’s convention.  I cooked and baked for the occasion, very excited to be camping out right next to the music. I did not know what to expect, nor did I have any idea what others might bring.  I made hot crossed buns and brought a really giant (about 15 pounds) country ham, and made plenty of biscuits.  I can’t remember the rest of the spread but do know everyone brought way too much food.    We ate, drank, and gave the food to our fellow merry makers so we would not need to take it back home with us.  The ham was super savory, chosen very carefully for Easter on the go.  Country hams are salt cured and require no cooking.  I was 19 years old with a big appetite and plenty of energy to dance late into the night. The party was memorable, wonderful, and very delicious.  A fun time was had by all.

When I arrived home in Durham Sunday night something just clicked in my mind.  I had a friend who had recently become a vegetarian because she witnessed a bird hang itself.  This did not strike me as a good reason not to eat meat, but the idea of being a vegetarian sprouted in my mind because of her.  She worked with me, and on Monday at the office I started talking to her about her two week old vegetarian practice.  I decided to try it.  There was no particular issue or reason at the time.  I ate way too much ham, and was having some kind of rebound from it.  In North Carolina in 1970 people did not take kindly to being questioned about meat in the restaurant dishes.  Vegetarianism was an extreme fringe belief system with few believers.  The Seventh Day Adventists were the core.  They sometimes had little health food stores with Worthington fake meat in cans, but there was not much catering to vegetarians in the 70’s.

Now being vegan is all the rage.  The vegetarian lifestyle services and product lines are mind boggling.  My diet went through a metamorphic change over time.  First I stopped eating meat, but had few cooking skills.  I learned to make tasty food, but had never heard of vegetarian diet for health, so I was heavy on the butter and whipped cream, etc.  Any food can be made to taste great with enough cream and butter.  In about 1972 I met a woman from California who was not only a vegetarian, but did not eat white flour or sugar.  We thought her odd in our Austin household of hippies and did not know what to feed her. We cooked from scratch but put sugar and white flour in almost everything.  We also drank Dr. Pepper like it was going out of style. She did leave an impression, however.  By learning to cook and expand the healthy ingredients in my cuisine I eventually gave up all sugar and white flour myself.

Today I am still a lacto-ovo vegetarian.  I like to make vegan food, and tend to eat much of my food raw.  I am not interested in full on veganism although I think it can be a very healthy choice.  I still enjoy dairy and eggs, so I buy organic products and use them as a minor part of the menu.  A little cheese goes a long way, and my butter habit is well under control now too.  I eat a bit of sugar these days too, but keep that at a minimum.  Common sense and savoring each bite are the keys to happy relating with sugar.  Why I am telling you this story, gentle reader?  I want you to know that being a vegetarian since 1970 has shown me a lot of different attitudes toward the idea.  I am often asked how to become a vegetarian by those who want to make a change.  I think the way to go is find one new vegetarian dish you like each week and start to switch out that for some of your beefier meals.  Experiment and try recipes your mother never served you.  Check out some ethnic restaurants with exotic vegetable preparations, and make them at home. Don’t restrict yourself or feel deprived.  Just branch out and do it.  If and when you succeed, don’t give us a bad name by telling other people what they should eat.  Badgering will never become popular.

 

Feng Po, Goddess of the Wind

In China the goddess Feng Po is in charge of wild animals, weather and movement. She must certainly be involved in global warming. She is seen riding a tiger.  She holds the wind in a bag over her shoulder on the days when it is calm on earth.  She has the power to move and or shake things into place.  Her message is integrity. Representing the winds of change, she must discern the most appropriate velocity of wind for each purpose. Her energy can be very refreshing, cleansing and clearing the air for new ventures.  Think of how many metaphors there are in English for this breath of fresh air.

Like other gods and humans she has a dark nature that is dangerous.  She warns against all false agreements and conditions.  Move carefully through your obligations and promises to others.  Giving requires a cheerful heart.  Quid pro quo, expecting something in return for favors, leads to resentment.  Feng Po teaches a healthy balanced approach to the needs of others.  If we allow space, time, and understanding into our decision making process we will be authentic.  We will say yes only when we genuinely want to engage, and we will discover the beauty of saying no when we are really not into it.  Feng Po will support and stay at the back of the sincere sailor on the winds of change.  She is known to reek havoc, unleashing stormy gusts of destruction to tear down bonds built from guilt.  She is sometimes called Feng Po Po, and even sometimes referred to as a male.  She represents the value in conserving and preserving energy, and spending it wisely.  On a personal basis she shows us how to say no to time wasting.  On a global level she asks us to make some sense of the power balance at work around the world.  We need to resist certain larger issues on the world stage in order to survive.  It is time to both show power and control it wisely.

Self Surveillance

I recently shopped my brains out to select a surveillance camera to mount outside to catch the casual thieves who steal things in our neighborhood. I selected the D Link system, which offers many different styles and models for both inside and outside. It is mounted on the wall over my front entry walkway. It is motion activated, which means on windy days it records frequently because when the trees move it captures 7 seconds of that too. I have needed to reset it a couple of times, but it works really well. No incidents have occurred since I placed it out there, but I am pretty surprised at the amount of traffic we have after midnight here in my residential condo village. There is nothing illegal about that, I am just surprised.

My friend Ms Cheevious held a contest on Mothers Day  to win a Piper system, which I entered.  Lisa was so impressed with the quality of hers, so  I decided maybe I would like it.  I won!!!! This is really a thrill, since I rarely even enter contests.  Now that it is here and I have installed it I am a huge fan of my new Piper.  It is for indoor use.  My dog has end of life issues.  At the moment she is doing pretty well, but she needs more attention than she used to.  Her issue is kidney problems, so she needs to urinate frequently.  She does let us know and has had very few accidents inside the house.  When I go out I start to wonder if she needs me, so I keep my trips away from home short.  More often than not when I come back to check on her she is in deep slumber exactly where I left her and does not wake for hours.

The Piper can show me a shot of her on her bed, and record a clip of 35 seconds if it detects motion.  It also records if it detects a loud sound.  I have set each of these up on a menu.  The set up could not have been easier, and there is no chip to record.  It all goes to the cloud, and then is easily deleted after you see the clips.  It has a huge wide angle lens that captures the whole room, and the audio quality is excellent.  Since I have the one camera I can tell if my dog is still passed out or howling at the door.  If I chose to combine several cameras I could follow her in all rooms of the house.  The app on my phone tells me if an event has been recorded, and gives me a live view.  I also have the capability to talk to the dog remotely. That should be funny.  Piper did have pet parents in mind when they created the system, so one of the settings is Pet at Home.  I am a very happy customer who may extend my coverage one day with more cameras.

The Piper has elements that measure temperature, light, and activity in the area.  If you install the interactive switches in your home you can remotely turn your lights on and off or change the thermostat.  You get a read out on the high and low temp, the humidity, the light, and activity during the last 24 hours.  If one of these were drastically wrong you can also set up alerts to call trusted friends if you are in vacation mode.  They have put this together with all the options of a home security company, for which you pay monthly, in a permanent and versatile solution for which you pay only once.  I like to be able to see the entry to my house as well as my snoozing hound from wherever I may be with my phone.  I had no idea how satisfying it would be.
